THE DEN10: JULY 17th

Last Sunday the Denton Holiday Lighting Festival Board and a crowd of supporters headed to Dan's to celebrate Christmas In July. The event was to kick off their fundraiser for the 25th Anniversary CD. It was a successful night, with some of our town's finest musicians getting on stage to support this non-profit entity that brings us one of the greatest events this town has to offer. Even the weather cooperated as it was rainy and in the 70's; a typical Christmas Day in Denton. "Well I guess summer's over!" was the joke of the night but the reality is the school year is right around the corner. I'll spare you the date, but time is running out to spend your days at the beach, make those Community Market trips and take the day to ride the A-train to the free DMA. Looking for something to do still? This week we've got Denton's first drunken Spelling Bee, beer tastings and more. Also, be on the look out for a major announcement this week. We're excited and you should be too.

THE DEN10: JULY 10

The Summer is half over -- are you halfway through your Summer to-do list? If not you better get on it. This week we've got another handful of things to keep you busy including a homegrown musical about the history of Denton. Sometimes the parallels between our town and Blaine, Missouri are frightening. Tonight there is an opportunity for a get together at Council Member Roden's house to discuss the recent political climates. This should be a lively discussion considering the strong positions held. The irony is that this sort of engagement is why no other council member puts themselves out there like this. But tonight we will see our community come together even in the light of profound differences of opinion and beliefs. We welcome this sort of discourse and are thankful we're among some of the brightest and thoughtful minds in the world and are able to voice our opinions without fear for ours or our families safety.

THE DEN10: JULY 3

What a magnificent time it is to be an American citizen. As we stare down the 237th observation of our nation's Declaration of Independence, it's important to remember those inalienable rights written down by Jefferson and Adams. That these truths are self evident, that's how it is. Not how we wish it was, but how we have no choice for it to be. Celebrate this however you can: sparklers in the streets, a house show, eating for 'Merica, staying on your couch and watching Wall-E, do it however you see fit. Get to the highest point you can get and watch the burning-magnesium light up the air and fall back to the earth as Souza is blaring from the general direction of Apogee Stadium. It's mesmerizing watching Denton grow, born from of the spark of freedom and democracy. Celebrate that.

Start your holiday off on the right foot.

Possessed By Paul Jame / Delaney Davidson | Dan's | 9PM | $10

THE DEN10: JUNE 26

Now that it's officially Summer and we've all seen the Super Moon (is it really?) what else is there? Well, July 4th is just over a week away. That's something. Can you believe it's still light at 8:45PM?  It's these little details that keep you hanging on to that slightly heavier than normal evening air and sticking around for one more drink on a weeknight and that's a good thing because thats what makes it summer break. As usual, there's plenty of reasons to get out and off your couch and away from your Hulu and Netflix queue and get into the discourse about Wendy Davis' filibusterer or how great it is that Texas ranks 49th in per-pupil education funding.

Strange Towers is literally The Undoing of David Wright meets Record Hop. Five years ago this meeting of a group of the most creative and heavy minds of our town seemed like a fantastically impossible dream but here they are in the flesh and they aren't apologizing for it.

Sunday June 30
Last Sunday's Open Shop | Tex's Tubs Drum Co | 11AM - 2PM
Bring your drums to work on at Tex's Tub's Drum Co. at 505 Ft. Worth Dr. #101 or just go hang out with the always perfectly animated Tex himself. Ask him about his DCI days, crack a beer and talk shop. This is a great step in the Maker Space direction. The idea of a shop opening up their doors to share knowledge and tools to other local artists. The more of this we have, the better our little creative class community is going to be. If you're looking to find a way to pitch in and get involved in this town, Tex is a great person to take notes from. He's also got great hair - so there's that too.

Hares On The Mountain w/ Dim Locator | Dan's | 5PM | FREE
A better Sunday evening couldn't be planned than this. Will Kapinos laying it down as Dim Locator followed by the Hares all for the price of nothing. Welcome to Denton, you are welcome.

THE DEN10: JUNE 19

Let's get down to  brass tacks, as they say. We live in a capitalistic economic system. It's a free market structure characterized by private ownership, personal decisions, prices, production and the distribution of goods (or sandwiches in). This is a real good thing. This system gives the consumer the option of eating fresh sandwiches but also gives the option of some serious and awesome local food choices. So it's time to put your money where your mouths (or stomachs) are and check out PamFood Brunch at Paschall's on Sunday or maybe the Mudbug & Microbrew event at Earthwise. They may not have neon signs to lead you to their front doors, but hey, like always, we've got you covered. There are really talented folks in our community doing what they love and it's just going to be a flat out more productive use of your time and money, and better for our town, to support the good things it has to offer. Because we all know that the best sandwich money can buy in Denton is J&J's Italian Sausage.

City Mouse / Pink Smoke / Daikailu / She Banshee | J&J's | 9:30 | FREE
If there ever was a thin line between Mumford and Sons and They Might Be Giants, City Mouse finds that line and sits on it. This is a really odd pairing of bands but it's free and there's opportunity for some good pizza or the best Italian sausage sandwich before or after you catch Pink Smoke which really is the highlight of this odd line up. The more they sound like The Damned, the better they get.

Fun fact about the Radar Brothers is that Jim Putman is the son of Bill Putman who is the founder of Universal Audio and known as the father of modern music recording. It's a gear thing. This is a stellar lineup with Foe Destroyer rounding out the local side of this bill. Be sure to check out their new release on bandcamp which is a gritty pop mix reminiscent of Self.

Thursday June 13
Chris Watson / The Mighty Orq (solo) | Dan's | 9PM | $7
Summertime blues anyone? Here's a great pair of guitar-slinger / Texas Blues players continuing the tradition of Hopkins, Vaugn and Gibbons. Yeah, the guitar-slinger thing's been done before (overdone) but there's a craft to the Texas Tradition that spans the invention of the guitar. Robert Johnson recorded half his catalog in Dallas. Lightning Hopkins roamed the piney woods decades after Blind Willie Johnson (blind from getting lye thrown in his eyes by his mother) died from pneumonia in his soaking wet bed weeks after his house burnt down waiting for his wife to return. This is a lineage you can be proud of when you're out-of-state.

Frykdahl, known for his work with Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum brings you this new project, Faun Fables. Cat People (CD Release) / New Science Projects / Kilgore Trout / Elesh Norn | Macaroni Island | 8PM | FREE + Donations for the touring band
The shock of reading Slaughterhouse-5 as an eighth grader is something you really never shake. Vonnegut was always such a confirming writer in the mind of the young and awkward. At any rate, Cat People release their CD (allegedly) recorded at Macaroni Island by Michael Briggs (Gutterth / Violitionist). Remember kids, the universe is a big place, perhaps the biggest and no jerks please.

THE DEN10

Monday was a great day to recover from The Quest For The Golden Jesus Chili Cookoff. The downside is that the short week means no time to plan for the weekend. That's why you're reading this, right?

Even though Summer is in full effect, the actual first day of Summer isn't until June 21st so take advantage of the cool weather and start making that list of Texas BBQ joints you're going to hit.

The Technicolors are on the road and coming into town early in the week with their petty-esque sounds.

THE DEN10

The way lines of storms magically split and go around Denton would make you think there's some sort of deflector shield generator in the basement of the courthouse. There was the time Denton flash flooded and the water rescue teams were out saving folks left and right but other than that and the occasional freak blizzard, we have pretty moderate weather and nothing like the super tornadoes that hit Oklahoma this week. We live very charmed lives in our bubble surrounded by increasingly good food and drink and always abundant talent. It's going to be a beautiful weekend to remember those who died while serving our country. Get out there, hang on to those you love, kiss 'em on the head and take it all in because people absolutely gave their lives so you could have the life that your living right now. Don't waste it.

Walk (stumble?) over to Rubber Gloves after the Greenbelt Farmhouse Ale runs out at Oak St. and catch this dense lineup of local favorites supporting Lord Buffalo from Austin.

Armadillo Ale Works Launch Greenbelt Farmhouse Ale | Oak Street Draft House | 5PM
If you were at our Election Party you got the pleasure of tasting a test batch of the Greenbelt Farmhouse Ale before anyone else. Judging from the way folks were knocking 'em down, I'd wager it's a pretty tasty brew. I'd recommend being there at 5PM for this one. There will be lines and some great people watching as it turns out all sorts of folks love beer. It's always great to see council-members and city employees imbibing with our community.

Spiderweb Salon Presents: "The Collaboration Issue" Release Show | 1200 Ridgecrest Circle | 6PM
Lots of music, lots of readings, lots of collaboration. Spiderweb launches it's "post-The Porch" zine with a full color first issue of poetry, prose, comics and essays by local artsy types. If you haven't been to one of these you need to and if you think you're of the artsy category, get involved.
