Did you know that there is a shipping container behind Maple Hall at UNT that grows 11 varieties of lettuce in a vertical hydroponic organic garden? Did you know that there is a massive bakery behind Clark Hall that bakes up bagels, croissants, and donuts from scratch? Recently, We Denton Do It had the chance to hang out in the halls of UNT, relive a little of the past, and see what the future has brought that made us a little bit jealous of the college kids down the street.
Who knew, a beautiful, stunning and (almost) 360 degree view of our beloved town has been collecting cobwebs on the 8th top floor of the historical Wells Fargo building on the corner of Hickory St and Locust? As of the last month, the top floor has been contracted to be transformed into a restaurant dubbed Sunago Bell which should open by next summer. You may soon find yourself dining on Mediterranean-influenced cuisine and admiring Denton’s landmarks such as the courthouse and TWU towers, from on high. Read on for more details on this brand new spot!
A slender silhouette with long dark hair and a firm handshake, Melanie Little Gomez Smith greets me warmly, with her husband Des Smith just behind her as we sit down to talk at the bar in West Oak on a breezy evening. Kambucha, their drink of choice, was their one precondition for our meeting spot.
Artists at their heart, the duo have seemingly explored it all, and are still -with only slight exhaustion but still enthusiasm -exploring it all. They do a diversity of art projects and mediums including photography, sculpting, mural painting, album art, music videos and more.
Most recently, within the span of two days the couple painted a mural that is funny, dark, thought-inducing all at the same time. A porpoise, a white rhino and other endangered, majestic species sit around table at LSA restaurant, coming together to resolve and discuss their looming fate of on-coming extinction.
Some people like Vegas. While we totally get that, we also recognize that the unabashed display of abject consumerism isn’t everyone’s jam. The Den10 however, has something for everyone. So load on up, get your mudbug-eating-face on and tear it up because let’s be hones, this is what you live for.
On any given day you can Google "BBQ in Texas" and more than 32 million results will pop up in your browser. We're barbecue people in Texas (some of us are barbeque people instead). In Denton though, we’ve got a handful of great places smoking meat with the best of 'em. In town we have a few favorites, but just on the outskirts of town, we have a new place to stop when we make the long drive between Southlake’s Trader Joe’s and home. Bumbershoot Barbecue is set up and ready to go, tucked behind Earl’s 377 and Kimzey’s Coffee at 407 and 377. Read on to see some photos and hear about our experience there earlier this week.
We spent the better part of Saturday sipping beers from Armadillo Aleworks at Lonestar Taps and Caps and learning all the barbecue secrets we could fit into our brains with the pit masters from Bet the House. After several hours of smoking meats, asking questions about trimming fat, and munching on some of the tastiest brisket we've ever had we figured we'd share our newfound wisdom with you. Read on for 5 things that will make your smoked meats better.
Not much is better on a Saturday than an ice cold beer and some smokey barbecue. Lucky for us, an event featuring a combination of the two will soon be happening in Denton. Read on for more BBQ and brew goodness and to find out how you can take part.
Sweet Water recently underwent a change in identity and became the newest Tex-Mex joint near the square, Agua Dulce. With a brightly painted patio and floral oil table clothes, the spot is still a great corner to grab a margarita and break some bread (or chips) with friends. We stopped by for brunch recently and we've decided that we just can't keep the brunch burrito a secret any longer. Read on to find out our favorite brunch cocktails and more!
There is a difference, as we all know, between the perceived life of Instagram perfect photos and real life, where things are little more dull, a little less perfect, and let's be honest - a little messy most of the time. Somehow, though - it feels like that Insta-perfect world is slowly creeping more and more into our daily lives. The best example of this to date is the incredible interior and coffee shop concept opening in Argyle next week, Kimzey's Coffee. Read on to find out why we're willing to drive a little farther for our caffeine fix.

We've got you covered. Read on for a few do's and don'ts regarding dating in Denton. Oh, and in case you were wondering, APA recommends "do's and don'ts," instead of "dos and don'ts." We didn't know either.
It is National Pizza Day today and what better time to take a brief look at some of your various pizza options in Denton and the surrounding area. Read on to find out some of our favorite pizza destinations in Denton.

As the weather is finally changing, and the leaves have finally figured out it is indeed fall, so has the menu at Barley and Board. Don't worry, just a few minor adjustments here and there so that you can still have your burger, and your bacon wrapped dates too. Now, though, they've switched a few things up to really amp up the fall flavor.
I remember when I was a junior in college at UNT, and a friend took me to Greenhouse for jazz and snacks at the bar. The lights were low, and there was still smoking allowed at the bar. The food was great, and the jazz was even better. I remember thinking to myself, "How have I lived here this long and never been here before?" The Greenhouse is a Denton institution and is attempting a new revitalization through a new menu. Read on to find out more about their menu revamp and one of our favorite new sandwiches in town.
I once accused my father-in-law of harboring pandas. Not to his face, mind you. I was in the car with my wife, on the way to visit her parents when I told her that her dad’s insurance career was just a front for a massive panda smuggling operation.
A little over a year ago Mariah Laughlin started baking up pies to pair with craft brews at Bearded Monk. Not too long after that she picked up steam on her pie-filled instagram account and her pie landed a magazine cover. While her crust skills are crazy good - she is really into connecting with people over pie. Read on to find out why you should head out to Nerd Nite next week to hear all about her life of pie.

Today is one of our favorite ridiculous made-up holidays: National Taco Day. As if we needed an excuse to eat food wrapped in tortillas. Is this how the Irish feel on St. Patrick's Day? Oh well, we better get in the spirit. If you're looking to celebrate National Taco Day, but you aren't sure how, we've got some information for you. We've written about a few of our favorite taco joints (there's no good alliteration for a term that means "taco place") in the hopes that you will frequent these establishments and enjoy the meaty goodness that awaits you there. Read on for taco information.
Garrett Dennington has been obsessed with craft beer and intrigued by the harder-to-find beers for years. Now his team travels the US visiting breweries and drinking those hard to find beers.
"We love craft beer and decided to take an annual road trip to discover new and exciting craft breweries." What he learned along the way was so much more. He met brewers in tight knit communities, folks at the bar who love their beer and so much about the local culture and lifestyle in each city he visited.
Restaurant Week may have an uninspired name, but it sure has become a force in the DFW food scene. Every August, certain restaurants across the metroplex offer specially planned three-course prix fixe dinners for either for either $35 or $45. Of that discounted price, 20% goes to charity. This year, the proceeds go to benefit the local hunger relief foundatoin, the North Texas Food Bank. While the vast majority of participating restaurants are located in Dallas and Fort Worth, a couple of local restaurants are involved this year. Read on to find out which ones!
The bean burrito is cheap. You can buy one for $0.99 at Taco Bell. At $1.39, it’s literally the cheapest thing on the menu at Rosa’s – the next closest is a cup of coffee which is a full $0.20 more. You can get one at Fuzzy’s for $3.99, which sounds expensive except that theirs is truly a burrito-sized item and is about half the price of the other, snootier burritos. (Note: The bean burrito has been removed from the Fuzzy’s menu. I believe this is what’s called “gentrification.”)
Some days you're just too tired to make dinner. And then there are the days when you're just too tired to even go pick dinner up. Sadly, then days when Mr. Chopsticks would deliver to your door are long gone, but Denton's decent delivery options have grown significantly in the past few years. Read on to find out a few of our favorite delivery options in town.
On the lot sandwiched between the Greater Denton Arts Council and the empty space we have lovingly come to know as 'The Hive' there sits a brightly colored shack that has gone through its fair share of restaurants. This time however, Chef Andres Meraz and his partner are bringing enough flavor and soul to the food that we are completely addicted to what he's dishing out and serving up. Read on to find out what we love about Boca 31, and why you're going to ditch your afternoon Sonic for some of their aguas frescas.

Denton’s springtime weather may be kooky and unpredictable, but one thing you can always count on are the offbeat sights and wacky underground events that keep our weekend social calendars full of choices that’d fluster even wise ole Solomon. One of these backyard traditions is the legendary QUEST FOR THE GOLDEN JESUS Chili Cookoff, which ain’t too underground anymore but for years was held at various “undisclosed locations."
Ten minutes south of 35E on 377 is the new restaurant concept by Sparky Pearson and Chef Chad Kelley. A little over 5 years ago Tim Love re-opened the Love Shack Denton to become a premier steak house - Queenie’s. Over time their dishes got more flavorful, more interesting, and we figured out that their bar was one of the best kept secrets in town. Now, they have an all new chef, Christopher Alford, who is serving up expertly executed dishes throughout the menu. We’re not only impressed - we’re a little blown away by the quality of craft-fare that is coming out of his kitchen. If you’re starting your year with a vegan-raw diet - look away now.
