THE DEN10

The traffic got a little lighter this week. Our already sleepy town got a little sleepier and then with the heat, sleepier still. After spending an hour staring into the sun at the Denton Creatives Mixer on Monday, you're probably ready to not really leave the house until the sun's down. It's time to start finding those apartment pools to sneak into for late night swimming and drinking warm PBR's. It's time for chili cook-offs, Fourth of July plans and vacations near the water. There's the way the sun hits the square in the summer that makes it smell like even the dust is getting a sunburn. Somehow that's just a reminder that summer is here and it's not going away until the town gets flooded with fresh young faces clad in the latest Urban Outfitter's catalog - who heard that Denton had a really great "scene", who are "really excited about classes" and have adorable questions like "what's your major?". As inevitable as all that is, the only thing there really is to wrap your head around is how to fully, and slowly, soak up the very unique Denton Summer experience. Time to start making plans.

He's the real deal and you've got to experience this man first hand to understand the depth of the form. Don't confuse his "roots" label for the watered down pretenders that are so common on today's "indie" circuit (kill me now please). This man lives it and breathes it and will speak as effortlessly about rare 78's and hard to find field recordings as he can about Plato's Theory of the Forms. In short, this man is the purest of gems.

I mean really, folks. Let's show Steve Cropper, Japanese drone lords Boris, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Swedish Freakout artists GOAT and all the other folks from around the world visiting our tiny hamlet this weekend that Denton, Texas is full of kind, decent, polite, talented, level-headed folks. Please be safe and vigilant, and if we could please just simmer down a little - that would be great. Lets have a nice and relaxing weekend full of music, friends and fried foods and a chicken dance. THE DEN10: APRIL 10

I get it. You just spent all your rent money to go see Sigur Rós Tuesday night with the rest of Denton - and the curtain projections were amazing, and the band was "killing it," and you were in the pit, and you cried a little during that one song that reminded you of that one time that everything was right with the world and, then laughed a little when the girl wouldn't stop screaming "I LOVE YOU JONSI," and then cried a little again because the strobes were brighter than the sun, and it was the greatest thing you've ever seen or will ever see in all the world EVER. I get that. So let me welcome you back to the very non-Icelandic world of Denton where you can continue to see bands "kill it" all week (as in please kill me now if I ever hear that phrase again). In fact, lets make a pact right now: bands shall not be referred to as "killing it" ever again because trust me they aren't. When the poop hits the fan and the killing actually begins, my bet is that whatever musicians you thought were "killing it" will actually be the first ones to go. I mean of course unless they are like really, really, REALLY killing it, like Sigur Rós killed it on Tuesday.

Wednesday April 10
Cool Womb / The Funs / The Days | Gloves | 9pm | $5

WEEK IN REVIEW: MARCH 25

There's something about a late chill that makes me want to bundle up and get out there to check out what our tiny hamlet in North Texas has to offer. This week we've got a handful of picks to satisfy  that urge.

Caravan Of Thieves | Dan's Silverleaf | 8pm | $7

Paul Slavens & Friends | Dan's Silverleaf | 10pm | FREE
It's good to see Denton's elder statesman of improv-songwriting back at Dan's. If you haven't seen it, are you really a dentonite? When it's working it can whip the room into a frenzy and when not, it can make you consider why you even get out of bed in the mornings. Always surrounding himself with the towns top musicians, Slavens offering, for better or worse is always a spectacle.

Dentonradio.com Night | Dan's Silverleaf | 8pm | FREE
Featuring Mockingbyrd Station, Levi Cobb and the Big Smoke and Eilee Morris.

The Denton Spoken Word Collective | Rubbergloves | 9pm | FREE
Oh my dear spoken word. How curiously redundant and ambiguous art thou. She was a thief, you gotta belief. She stole my heart and my cat. Might be worth checking out if not only for the probably entertaining side commentary from newly enthroned, full-time talent buyer / bartender, Scott Porter.
