Aside from awesome things like coffin races, October also brings its fair share of mythical beings to town. While we haven't seen any yetis, we have seen a white deer and we expect to be overrun by all sorts of interesting creatures demanding candy and treats later on this week. After the appearance by a white stag earlier this month a reader wrote in to us under the nom de plume J. Wilgus Eberly with anticipation of what his appearance would soon bring. Oh, also narwhals because why not? Read on for more...

It’s Halloween season again in Denton, with Day Of The Dead and coffin races and all manner of spooky fun to choose from! This also means its time to share another one of Denton’s nifty ghost stories!! We’ve previously scooped y’all on The 1963 Pecan Creek Monster Hunt, some of Denton’s Ghostly Guardians, and our most famous specter that is said to haunt The Old Alton Goatman’s Bridge… but I’ll bet you haven’t heard about The Phantom Farmer said to still be mulling around the Bayless-Selby House Museum in our Denton County Historic Park! This story has it all: betrayal, murder, scandal, and more’n just a little lingering haunted intrigue since back in the day.

Whenever we have a bunch of photos from a certain event, we like to break What We Did into two posts. Denton's annual Day of the Dead Festival has a habit of being awesome and generating lots of photo-ops and this year wasn't any different. So, here's your second What We Did post of the day, featuring plenty of images of this weekend's spooky festivities (it is a little heavy on coffin racing, but that isn't exactly a problem).
While the rain may have seemed like it put a damper on Saturday's festivities, people still came out in droves to get their face painted, take in some racing, and watch Cirque Du Horror. Personally, we enjoyed Scott Porter's role as the announcer of the Coffin Race again this year. Our particular favorite quote was, "Control, ALT, Defeat!"

Sometimes you need a week like the one we just had to help you remember why you love Denton. Watching a large crowd of people standing in the rain to cheer on homemade coffins rolling down Hickory St. is a great Denton pick-me-up. In fact, all of last week was pretty darned awesome. Keep Denton Beautiful gave away a bunch of trees again, we all got together and watched Back to the Future on the courthouse lawn, and then there was Day of the Dead complete with Cirque Du Horror and coffin racing.
What We Did is our weekly roundup of photos that WDDI staff and readers have taken over the past seven days. We've got 17 of our favorite images from the past week in Denton, TX below. The images feature pics from all of the aforementioned events and then some. In fact, y'all took so many great photos from the Day of the Dead festival, that we're splitting today's What We Did into two separate posts. So keep up with the blog today and there will be another photo post later this afternoon.
If you'd like to be included in What We Did, tag your images with #WDDI on Instagram, and check back here next Monday. As always, we're limited in the photos we can post, but we encourage you to search the hashtag #WDDI and check out all of the other awesome photos that get tagged.

On Saturday morning Hickory St. will see on the upwards of 60 different casket-clad racing machines hoping to take the title in one of two categories: speed and fan favorite. In honor of the 4th annual Coffin Races, we chatted with local coffin racing legend John Green about this year’s upcoming event.

The last picture in today's What We Did is a fun little lego set on top of a box of Hypnotic Donuts. That got us kinda wanting to see some more Denton scenes in Lego form. We'd love to see your Denton-themed Lego creations. So if you get some free time this week (do people still get that?), borrow your child's blocks (or steal some from a friend's child - not really, though) and bet to building. Share 'em with us on Instagram so we can see your creations!

October may be halfway gone, but we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of all the family-friendly activities coming your way. There’s loads of free movies, free candy, free flowers, and free activities for people of all ages. Let’s face it, Denton isn’t going to shy away from fall with all her fickle beauty, creepiness, and pumpkin-spice delicacies (Have you tried The Great Pumpkin donut at Hypnotic? I have, for several days in a row).
