MOVIE NIGHT: BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II

Great Scott! It's finally October, y'all. It's sure as heck time again for another movie night on the courthouse lawn. Last time, we all hunkered down and watched Johnny Depp cut hair, trim hedges, and get a lap dance from a neighbor in the Tim Burton classic, Edward Scissorhands. This time out, we're hitching our wagon to Robert Zemeckis' Delorean with Back to the Future II. Get it down in your calendar ASAP. Wednesday, October 21st, we will be on the courthouse lawn - picnic regalia in tow - ready to get our movie on.

PEOPLE OF DENTON: DOUG CAMPBELL

If you’ve been on the University of North Texas’ campus lately, you might have seen signs with a caricature of UNT’s Librarian Doug Campbell around the Library Mall. It simply reads “Ask Doug!" which is the perfect segue into this month's People of Denton post. So we did it. We asked Doug all the questions, and what he had to say was insightful and of course, oh-so Denton.

WHAT WE DID: OCTOBER 5TH 2015

What We Did is our weekly roundup of photos that WDDI staff and readers have taken over the past seven days. We've got 21 of our favorite images from the past week in Denton, TX below. And what a week it was. We saw future Denton musicians give us a performance at Harvest House, citizens getting in their last climb in at Eureka playground, and plenty of folks celebrating Octoberfest properly on both Oak St. and Walnut St. That wasn't all either. It was a pretty crowded weekend with beautiful weather so we broke our rule and went posted a few more photos than normal.

If you'd like to be included in What We Did, tag your images with #WDDI on Instagram, and check back here next Monday. As always, we're limited in the photos we can post, but we encourage you to search the hashtag #WDDI and check out all of the other awesome photos that we were unable to include this week. Click the images below to be led back to the photographer's Instagram page. LOST IN THE DESSERT: THE BEST PIE IN DENTON

I've long heard rumors in whispers around town that the best pie in Denton can be found at Loco Café. Not only did my long overdue reconnaissance mission need to be performed between the hours of 7:00am and 3:00pm, but the pie doesn’t even show up until Friday. You may see this elusive beast Saturday, Sunday, or even Monday morning for the luckiest, but those who appreciate freshness, predictability, and just-from-the-oven warmth can and should make their standing pie dates around 10am on Friday.

OAKTOPIA AND CHILL: FESTIVAL RECAP

Oaktopia took over downtown Denton for its junior year of programming, offering interactive art installations, a mini-skate park set up, outdoor movies, and oh yeah - live music. Once known for being a predominantly hip-hop driven festival, this year they took a heavy indie turn at Isreal Nash and went full speed toward Edward Sharpe and his Magnetic Zeros. We aren’t complaining, though. We like Sarah Jaffe, too.
