THE DEN10: SEPTEMBER 25

Its hard to believe we're staring into October already. Once it gets going it really doesn't slow down until you find yourself trying to figure out how to get home for the holidays. Well there is once again plenty to take advantage of in our 'tiny little boring town' this week. From a Breaking Bad watch party at Dan's to a pop-up Wine dinner at Chestnut Tree, there is a ton of variety to keep you busier than you should be. Make sure to hashtag #WDDI in your Instagram or Facbook pics from the weekend if you want to be featured in our Monday post, What We Did. If you happen to run an establishment and are a little clever, this could be a way to show off your stuff on one of our most popular posts of the week. Just an idea.

Wednesday September 25
Midlake / Doug Burr  | Dan's Silverleaf | 8PM | $15
As of this moment there are six tickets left to the second night of Midlake's World Tour of Denton 2013. They should be wrapping up their first set as I write this and I'm wondering if there will be a positive reaction to there being half as many flutes as previous lineups of this hometown favorite. I also wonder which show Jason Lee will be at. At any rate, we'll always be a sucker for their 2004 effort, Bamnan & Silvercork.

Thursday September 26
Daniel Markham / Brent Best / Christian Lee Hutson | Dan's Silverleaf | 9PM | $7
Christian Lee Hutson's got a voice with some serious songwriting chops. At least enough to hang with the other heavy hitters on this bill. Be prepared to be impressed by the craftsmanship of everyone that gets on Dan's stage this Thursday.

EYE PLAY | UNT North Gallery | 5PM | FREE
Holli Noelle Hays will be displaying some of her favorite prints accompanied by light refreshments.

Friday September 27

Ella Minnow / Savage & The Big Beat / The Cozy Hawks | Dan's Silverleaf | 9PM | $5
Remember Jurassic Park The Musical? Classic Denton.

Babar / Blessin' / Feverbones / Dome Dwellers | Rubbergloves | 9PM | $5
Here's a pretty diverse lineup of some of the most talented active bands we've got. I also really approve of their event page because it's got everything I need as far as info about where, when and how much it is PLUS it's got some links to all of the band's music. Really good work fellas; on the music and the promotion.

Sparkling Wine Dinner | The Chestnut Tree | 6:30PM |

Each course of this dinner will be served with a different sparkling wine. Most of the items seem to be locally sourced even down to the Kurobota Pork Loin that they'll be stuffing with spinach. Chestnutt always knocks it out of the park with these sorts of special pop up dinners so be sure to take advantage of them when they pop up.

Saturday September 28
7th Annual Oktoberfest | Cool Beans, Riprocks, Lou's | 6PM | $12

For a measly dozen dollars you'll get a commemorative t-shirt, 3 authentic steins and all you can eat germanish food like brats and kraut. All this plus live polka music and you've got yourself an Octoberfest situation on Fry St.

Sunday September 29
The Dramatic Final Episode of Breaking Bad | Dan's Silverleaf | 7PM | FREE
From what I hear and if you've been watching this show, you should probably watch this one so why not have a few drinks up at Dan's while you're at it.

Last Sunday's Open Shop | Tex's Tubs Drum Co | 11AM - 4PM
Feel like fixing something with some tools at a shop and having a potluck also? This has turned into quite a gathering of folks handy with tools, handily handing them to those without so they can fix their gear. We love that this happens. It needs to happen more.

Tuesday October 1
The Tuesday Night Bike Ride | The Language Building UNT | 9PM | FREE
This has been going on for longer than I can remember. A mass group of riders taking over the mean streets of Denton on a Tuesday night. Seems like it'd be a pretty good time if you've got a bike.

THE DEN10: AUGUST 28

Here we go again. Another semester and another list of the top ten things we think you should be checking out this week. There's something in the air in Denton as the summer closes out. The sleepy, dusty town fills up with new faces and is bursting at the seams with potential and enthusiasm. It really is a great time to be a part of this city, and we encourage you to do just that week after week. Get involved, show up, be present, get off your phone and Facebook and get out there. If not, you'll end up in a very tiny little boring bubble in the ocean of creative activity that is the town you are in.

Wednesday August 28
Dromez / Curvette / Violent Squid | Rubbergloves | 9PM | $5
Some noise, some space rock and some of the weirdest pop to come from Denton is a good way to start off the weekend early at Gloves.

Read Aloud Workshop with Walker Smart II | 1425 Bolivar St | 6PM | FREE
Another great event put on by the lovely folks of Spiderweb Salon.

Bukkake Moms And The Problem Dogg Orchestra / INUBO / Madonna. / Race Traitor | Macaroni Island | 9PM | FREE
Seriously, no jerks.

Thursday August 29
Nice Up The Porch | Dan's Silverleaf | 7PM | FREE
Here's a collection of some of our favorite DJ's, plus a very special guest out on our favorite porch at our favorite pub. Craig Welch (Brutal Juice) curates this night. Be sure to check out 1670AM if you're near the square for the best of our underground radio broadcasting.

Homescapes | Cora Stafford Gallery @ Oak St. Hall | 5PM | FREE
Geryn Roche displays three years of ceramics work in one of our favorite galleries. Check out her work.

Unicorn Lake Summer Concert Series | Beth Marie's @ Unicorn Lake | 7PM | FREE
Wise Ruby plays this Thursday. If you're not familiar with the town, Unicorn Lake is off 35E by the AMC theater just south of The Golden Triangle. If you see signs for Sasquatch Canyon, you've gone too far.

Friday August 30
Tricounty Terror / FTW / Jacko Suede | Andy's | 9PM | $6
Come early, stay late.

Saturday August 31
The Gospel of The Mouth Saint featuring H.I. Jr. & Skagg Phillips | Dan's Silverleaf | 9:30PM | $5
Walker Smart is going to have a busy week it turns out. Not sure what to expect out of this night but it's got some promise to be interesting. H.I. Jr. is an experimental psych pop quintet that's got some range.

Sunday September 1
Friends With Benefits Concert | Fry St. | 11:30AM | $15
All proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity in Hood County to help rebuild homes destroyed in May's tornado. There's a pretty impressive list of locals on this one to check out anchored by the infamous Danny Rush & The Designated Drivers.

Monday September 2
FREE WEEK 2013 @ RGRS | Rubbergloves | 9PM | Sept 2 - Sept 7
This year's free week has been curated by Scott Porter and just might be the biggest FREE WEEK this town has ever seen. Five nights of some of the best bands in town and all of it FREE. Always worth it.

THE DEN10: AUGUST 14

This summer ended up pretty successful. The cooler weather and the trips to the beach were great, and gave us plenty of memories to store away in our Facebook photo albums. In the same way we wish it could last a little longer, we're also ready for a change. We're even ready for all those kids to get back and fill up our streets and venues and occasionally go the wrong way on one of our four one way streets. If you're thirsty for things to do in Denton then get ready to drink from the fire-hose because it's looking like it's going to be an insanely busy fall.

Wednesday August 14
Floral Wine Class | Wine Squared | 7PM | $15 RSVP
Want to talk about wine and sound like you know what you're talking about? Just say things like "floral bouquet" and attend this aptly named Floral Wine Class.

Thursday August 15
KXT 91.7 Presents Paul Slaven's 9 Year Anniversary Party | Dan's Silverleaf | 9PM | $10
Mr. Slavens is a force of nature. Whether it's making up and performing songs on the spot with a full band or marching in the 4th of July Parade with a euphonium, this man attacks life in full-time beast mode. Oh yeah, he's also got little radio show on KXT that has aired every Sunday for nine years. He's a truly a remarkable citizen and well deserving of all the accolades and alcohol he'll be receiving this Thursday at Dan's.

Unicorn Lake Summer Concert Series | Beth Marie's @ Unicorn Lake | 7PM | FREE
The "other" Denton has got some great stuff going on lately. There's quite a few things happening out there that are well worth the trek all the way to the other side of town for and we hope they keep going on. When Denton expands even further south down 35E, I'm really hoping they name it Leprechaun Canyon.

Friday August 16
RTB2 / Bashe / Biscuit Head / Losing | Macaroni Island | 8PM | FREE
No jerks!

North Texas State Fair and Rodeo | The Fairgrounds | All Day | $15/ Adult, $5/Child
Oh yeah, and this is back again.

Saturday August 17
Rotting Out / Take Offense / Minus / Relentless / Dead In The Dirt | Rubbergloves | 6PM | $10
They sure aren't making punk like they used to. Be afraid of this show. But in a good way.

Two Tons Of Steel CD Release | Dan's Silverlead | 8PM | $10
One of the most intimidating bands to roll through Denton. Truly Texan.

Sunday August 18
Hares Never Ending Happy Hour w/ Nathan Brown | Dan's Silverleaf | 5PM | FREE
Hares are playing Dan's again.

Figure Drawing Practice Session | Macaroni Island | 6PM | FREE
So weird. We love it! No jerks!

Tuesday August 20
Vulgar Fashion / Daniel Francis Doyle / Hex Cult | J&J's | 9PM | FREE
Here's a gem of a lineup at J&J's early next week.

The Riverboat Gamblers / Blacklist Royals / John Tole / Stymie | Rubbergloves | 8PM | $10
This is about as standard a show as you can get at Gloves. It'll be packed, sweaty and possibly bloody.

THE DEN10: JULY 31

Dave Bazaan is playing Dan's Silverleaf this Thursday. Just wanted to make sure to get that out of the way and mention that you need to read ahead on who else is in his new band Overseas, because I would really feel awful if that one got by anyone. It's probably going to be a pretty big deal and one of those shows that people talk about for years. Maybe like when Middle East played Dan's to 40 people at NX35. Summer's almost over, and it's time to get some good shows under your belt so you've got at least something to show for it. This week there's plenty of opportunity to get it all in and then some. We've got 100 degree temps in the forecast, also so it really is an excellent time to make some unforgettable summer memories.

Wednesday July 31
Steak & White Wine | Wine Squared | 7PM | $30 RSVP
The thing I like more than the fact that Wine Square has such interesting and tasty events is how curious I am about the to-the-point naming of their events. What is this about? Steak & White Wine, nothing clever or catchy, you're either in or carry on. I applaud the economy. Carry on.

Frank Smith / Seth Sherman / The Satans of Soft Rock | Rubbergloves | 9PM | $5
Frank and Seth are visiting from ATX and The Satans, one of the tightest outfits around, of course are from Butthole, America.

Thursday August 1
Overseas / Monahans | Dan's Silverleaf | 10PM | $18
Did you know this is Dave Bazan's new band? Did you know that it features Will Johnson, Bubba and Matt Kadane? If you know that then you've probably realized it would be a really good idea to get your tickets in advance. An equally impressive group of musicians, Monahans opens up the night. Don't be the person that ten years from now lies about being at this one.

Friday August 2
Death & God | Black Box Theater | 7:30 | $15
When are you going to get another chance to see Woody Allen's two act play Death & God in an re-purposed abandoned section of a small town newspaper? The irony would only be enhanced if Black Box was the location of the old obituary office.

Spiderweb Salon + SCRAP Denton | SCRAP | 7PM
So on the first Friday of every month, the square holds an "art walk" that is aptly named First Friday. You know it as "That Friday when it seems like there's more folks milling about and music coming out of every doorway on the square". Spiderweb Salon takes over the SCRAP space to feature music, prose and comedy. There's always a handful of my favorite people in this town on these lineups. So make sure not to miss out. The DIME store has food and fun stuff, too, if you're looking for something off of the square.

Saturday August 3
Fishboy EP Release Show / Two Knights / Savage & The Big Beat | Rubbergloves | 9PM | $5
Denton's beloved Fishboy is celebrating the birth of an EP. Did you catch his IMAVOLCANO video? Cause we're still cracking up at that one. This is a really solid bill from start to finish and absolutely worth your hard earned five clams.

Ryan Pickop & Hanna Read of Lomelda | 2014 Northwood Terrace
Here's an idea, host a potluck, BYOB, concert at your house. More of this please. What time do we show up?

Kona Beer Dinner | The Chestnut Tree | 6:30PM | $45
This is a real treat. Lomi Lomi Salmon, Poke, Poi, fresh fruit and a Kalua pig! A Kona rep will be there talking about the beers he brought and you'll get a souvenir glass. Plus 10% of sales goes to feed the hungry on Christmas Day. RSVP fast before the last spots are filled.

Beatles Vs. Stones | Dan's Silverleaf | 9PM | $8
In 20 years will it be Radiohead Vs. Coldplay? Because kill me now please.

Sunday August 4
KEEP IT LOCAL - A Community Fundraiser | Dan's Silverleaf | 4PM
More creatives mixing and mingling and drinking. One could really fill their schedule these days in Denton.

WEEKEND PHOTO RECAP - FEATURING ETSY DENTON

That was probably the last weekend of (semi) decent weather we'll have until October, Dentonites. Hope you made the most of it. It was hard not to with all of the various events going on. While many Denton ISD seniors prepared to graduate on Friday, the folks over at DIME and Etsy Denton prepared for their annual Summer Bazaar. We hit it up and had a blast. Did you manage to grab one of our stickers while you were there? Slap it on your neighbor's car and rep WDDI for us, if you did! Below, you'll find photos from our excursions at the Etsy Denton Summer Bazaar at the Greater Denton Arts Council building and a few random photos from other events this weekend. Before we craft fair'ed it up - we managed to hit up the now smoke free Rubber Gloves to kick off our weekend properly with a Sweet Talk/World of Pleasure/Pink Smoke showdown.  Throw #WDDI in your 'grams and we'll post our favorites in our Monday photo recap next week!

The weekend saw lots of other interesting things, too. We were surprised to find Oak St. Drafthouse to be standing room only Friday evening seeing as so many of the college students have already vacated for the summer.

In what seemed to be rather quick, Vigne has already started operating in their new location further down on Hickory St. in the old Cellar 22 spot.  #WDDI

Oak St. Drafthouse was attacked by a cardboard robot on Saturday evening. Extremely cheap viral marketing for Pacific Rim maybe?  #WDDI

Rusty Taco kept us coming back for more. We apparently weren't the only ones. Their patio seemed to be pretty packed the entire weekend. Did you get a chance to try their jalepeno-watermelon margarita yet?

THE DEN10

Monday was a great day to recover from The Quest For The Golden Jesus Chili Cookoff. The downside is that the short week means no time to plan for the weekend. That's why you're reading this, right?

Even though Summer is in full effect, the actual first day of Summer isn't until June 21st so take advantage of the cool weather and start making that list of Texas BBQ joints you're going to hit.

Thursday May 30
The Gourds | Dan's | 9PM | $15
Austin heavy-hitters The Gourds take over Dan's this Thursday and probably won't be playing Gin & Juice unless you ask really nicely or loudly.

Twilight Tunes | Courthouse Square | 6:30PM | FREE

The award winning series continues with Bonnie & Nick Norris. Load the kiddos up on candy and ice cream and let them go nuts.

Bukkake Moms / Curvette / The Great Depressions | Gloves | $1
On a budget this summer? Can't beat a single dollar for this one.

Friday May 31
Doug Burr / Fox & The Bird / Glen Farris | St. David's | $10 / $13
This is the same beautiful room Sarah Jaffe and Seryn played a few years back. The copious smoking outside the door is what kept tasteful shows from happening till now but with the guidance of Denton statesmen Eric Pulido and Dave Sims paving the way to use this room, lets hope the trend continues.

Hares On The Mountain / Boxcar Bandits / AM Ramblers | Dan's | 9PM | $8

Cardo's 2013 Summer Camp Enrollment Closes | Cardo's Farm Project | this summer
Make sure to get your kiddos enrolled in one of the programs Cardo's is offering this summer.

Dog Days Of Denton | 5PM | Quakertown Park
Who doesn't like dogs? Or a park overrun by dog lovers? This event kicks off at 5PM with "Yappy Hour" (now we're talkin') and starts up with more festivities Saturday morning at 8:30AM. This not for profit organization "welcomes FRIENDLY DOGS and their owners. All owners are responsible and liable for their pet(s). For everyone’s safety, dogs MUST BE ON A LEASH and have CURRENT VACCINATIONS."

Saturday June 1
Baptist General's Album Release "JACKLEG DEVOTIONAL TO THE HEART" | Dan's | 9PM | $15
Possibly the longest and most awaited record from a band in the history of Denton. Whatever your thoughts on their recordings, Flemmons and company have always had a way of taking over a room when they play live.

Denton Camera Exchange Grand Opening | 117 Piner St | 4PM | FREE
Food, drink and The Instant Film Society will be there with their 8x10 Instant Photo Booth.

Tuesday June 4
Birds of Night / The Technicolors / HI JR | Dan's | $10
The Technicolors are on the road and coming into town early in the week with their petty-esque sounds.

SHOW PREVIEW: THIS WILL DESTROY YOU

This-Will-Destroy-You.jpeg

One of our favorite post-rock outfits out of Austin/San Marcos is coming back to town. Its been a little while since they set foot on a Denton stage and we are more than happy to have them back. In fact, we were so happy that we decided to make this our first "We Denton Do It Presents" show since our relaunch!

This Will Destroy You has continued to tour and make music that transfixes especially in a live setting. Their music has always been heavy on atmosphere and crashing melodies and their last album, Tunnel Blanket found the band brooding and ferocious as they ever have been before. Their last show in town was an outrageous performance that left us breathless at Hailey's. We know that they are more than capable of captivating Denton once again. We're pretty pumped to see what they have in store for us this time around. You should be, too.

Dan's Silverleaf | 9pm | $13 ADV / $16 DOS | Buy Tickets: spunetickets.com

Here's a video of This Will Destroy You performing their song "Communal Blood" live at Good Records in Dallas, TX.
