THE DEN10: FEBRUARY 5TH

This week's events include a really solid mix of lecture, comedy, and rock shows. There’s a diversity that Denton’s possesses that will remain it’s strength for years to come. As we stand on the verge of the largest growth the town has ever seen, it will become necessary more than ever for people to stand up and lead. Whether it’s putting together a comedy show in your backyard or signing up for Mentor Denton, the need will always be there and your community will always need you. Part of what We Denton Do It’s mission has been is to encourage civic participation and engagement because we believe that the more people who are throwing their hat in the ring to help out, the better our town is, the safer our neighborhoods are and a more just society will emerge from that. Sometimes it gets messy, but messy is much better than waking up in a few years to a town that’s lost its way, lost its culture, lost its tacos, and lost its identity. So, get out there and make Denton a place where our community can thrive. In fact, lets leave this place better than we found it because that’s the right thing to do.

Is it Spring? Is it Winter? Who cares, we’re in Denton and as usual, there are too many things to get into if you’re surviving the worst allergy season in recorded history. Benadryl is your friend and we are just here to help you out and point you in the right direction this week. Saturday is going to be a pretty big day and we’re excited because we got fancy and got some pairs of box tickets to the Murchison for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra performance. It’s looking forward to these things that make the week and the allergies bearable.

Does anyone else want to cut their face off, set it on fire, and subsequently bury it? This has got to be the absolute worst allergies have ever been. Actually, that's something we say about once a year at about this time when our noses start to get runny. Some tips to get through this tough time include Benadryl, Tylenol PM, tea, water and as much sleep as you can fit in your schedule. There are massive amounts of incredible things coming down the pipeline - it truly does feel like we’re all drinking from the fire-hose this time of year.

THE DEN10: JANUARY 14th

You can tell school is back in session. There's a few signs if you look closely. The roads are more crowded, there's an additional 45 second wait in line at Kroger, and there’s a few less parking spots on the square at midnight on any given day of the week. It’s good to be back in the swing of things in our tiny urban environment and we're happy to be back into our daily routines of both work and play. As we turn the corner into February and all the planning meetings for the year wrap up, the calendars start filling up faster than we'd like for them to. It will be no-time until we all start wishing it were summer. This week, we’ve collected the top ten things you should be putting on your calendars for the next seven days. Read on!

THE DEN10: JANUARY 7th

There’s something about being away from Denton that can really make you pine. It’s really hard to know exactly what there is to be missing when you're in the thick of it. Maybe it’s the subtlety that you can spend a lifetime trying to wrap your head around and never quite figure it out. It keeps you on your toes. If it’s not the random construction and street closures then it’s the weather. If the weather and traffic are fine then you’ll realize that there’s a huge percentage of the population that up and leaves every semester. It’s an oddball. But it’s our oddball, and as you can see by the glorious return of the Den10, a list of events happening in one of the greatest, strangest oddball towns on the planet. Get out there and check it out and lets keep it that way.

Wednesday January 8
Whiskey Wednesday w/ Country Nightmares / Starfire On The Mountain | Dan’s Silverleaf | 10PM | FREE
Looks like Grady Don Sandlin and the notorious Justin Collins will be bringing you some 60’s and 70’s Honky Tonk Dance music. Sounds like that’ll go well with a good amount of whiskey. Our vote is Isaac Hoskins will win the dance-off if there is one.

Game Night | Rubbergloves | 10PM | FREE
Bring some board games and play with your friends. Or just sit on your phone playing candy ninja or whatever. Cheap drinks and bad decisions!

Professors Corner Presents “Octavia Butlers Science Fiction” | Denton Public Library South Branch | 7PM
Well this is a gem of an event that we’ve just uncovered. Dr. AnaLouise Keating will be leading a discussion entitled “Octavia Butler’s Science Fiction”. This looks like an ongoing program funded by a grant. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more of these for sure.

Thursday January 9
Crafternoon | SCRAP Denton | 3PM - 6PM
This is pitched as an event where the community can come in to their weekly workshop and work together on crafts. People love crafts and clever names.

UNT Men’s Basketball v. Southern Miss | UNT Super Pit | 7PM | $7 - $12
Y’all like sports right? Well if you don’t, we bet the band is probably killing it down in the SUPER PIT.

Check Marcellino’s work on display.

Friday January 10

Now here’s a show that should pique the interest of any true Dentonite. A great collection of some of the most unique and talented musicians from the past ten years.

Three Tall Women | Black Box Theatre | 7:30PM | $15
Tickets to this 1994 Pulitzer Prize winning play can be bought at the Campus Theatre box office or by phone (940.382.1915) or by internet (dentoncommunitytheatre.com).  This has been described as a “compelling theatre experience” which is starting to make us wonder: why is it spelled “theatre” and not “theater”?

A.Dd+ / Blue, The Misfit / Sam Lao / -topic / Lord Byron / Jaeson Green / AV The Great / Jay Clipp | Granada Theater | 8PM | $15 - $35
Hometown-Hip-Hop-hero AV The Great takes the stage down south at Granada Theater. Check out this weeks feature on AV The Great if you need some reasons why this trip is worth it.

Saturday January 11
Grapevine Craft Brewery Launch Party | OSDH&CP & ESSC | 7PM
Some new releases that wound pretty tasty will be released plus you can score a free glass. Monarch is a Classic American filtered Wheat beer and Lakewood is described as a Hoppy American Rye Pale Ale.

THE DEN10: DECEMBER 18th

After last week's ice tornado hurricane storm of events that seemingly never ended, this week is going to be a piece of cake and next week you should all be nestled in with your family and friends around a fire or a laptop streaming The Newsroom to celebrate the winter holidays just like Krampus intended. Things really slow down and traffic really thins out as the students head home for a month but these are the times when you learn who the true townies are.

A very convincing Queen tribute is never a bad way to end the weekend.

THE DEN10: DECEMBER 11

Can things just go back to normal please? Apparently they can't until the cluster of this weekend's rescheduled events combined with what was an already very busy weekend finishes up. The good news is that we won’t have to use our Yaktrax or 4 wheel drive for another three years because this is Texas. This past weekend also proved once again that if you want precipitation to fall from the sky (either frozen or not) just plan a large scale outdoor event that depends on good weather.

Denton Holiday Lighting | The Courthouse Lawn | 5:30PM
This will be a lower-key event with no hay or carriage rides and the streets won’t be blocked off. We’re imagining the humble townsfolk gather around our meek and mild tree as we hold hands and spontaneously sing a song. “Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small was singing, without any presents at all.”

Wassail Fest | The Square | 5:30PM | FREE WASSAIL
Bring your Wassail judging face and a flask of rum to spike your favorite drink. This is a great way to enjoy the chaos and take a peek into downtown business' Christmas wares while having a nice evening stroll around the square.

New Fumes / Nervous Curtains / Visceral Cuts / Grandma / DJ YeahDef | Rubbergloves | $3 | 9PM

Sunday December 15
Liquor Store / Video / Fogg | Rubbergloves | 9PM $5
Not a shabby Sunday evening lineup for any venue in Denton. Liquor Store will be sure to finish thawing your chilled bones.

Monday December 16
Bourbon Barrel Beer Week | OSDH & ESSC | 7PM
They’re starting off the week with a Rahr Bourbon Barrel Winter Warmer and an Anderson Valley Bourbon Barrel Oatmeal tapping at OSDH and ESSC respectively. Both of those sound good enough to drink.

THE DEN10: DECEMBER 4th

Will this weekend bring an actual icemaggedon this time? Whatever happens outside, all eyes should be on Michael Gruber and Pete Delkus to see how the “twitter storm” develops (or doesn’t). We’re busy stocking up on toe-warmers and hot coco to get us through a very chilly Holiday Lighting Festival & Wassail Festival this Friday on the Courthouse Lawn.
