DIME FEATURED MAKER: ARI JONES

Singer.jpg

As we kick off a new year, DIME met up with the ever-inspirational Ari Jones of Project 4.30. Not only will this gal’s impressive line of bags motivate you to travel more in 2014, but she’s got a pretty unique story to boot. How many people do you know have moved back to Denton FROM Austin because our creative community is a better fit for them? Yeah, that’s what we thought.

THE DEN10: JANUARY 29

Is it Spring? Is it Winter? Who cares, we’re in Denton and as usual, there are too many things to get into if you’re surviving the worst allergy season in recorded history. Benadryl is your friend and we are just here to help you out and point you in the right direction this week. Saturday is going to be a pretty big day and we’re excited because we got fancy and got some pairs of box tickets to the Murchison for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra performance. It’s looking forward to these things that make the week and the allergies bearable.

ADVERTISE WITH WE DENTON DO IT

Did you know that you can now advertise with WDDI? We view our role in Denton as not only a primary source for all things local and fun, but as a great way to showcase the incredible talent and work coming out of Denton.

We do our best to help promote the best local businesses, artists, musicians and events. We do our best to be real about stuff, though, and believe our readership trusts our opinion on matters. We want to be a place where small businesses can find advertising that fits their budget and make an actual difference to their bottom line.

THREE SONGS: JANUARY

We'll be honest. This column can sometimes be a pain. We try not to halfass it and fill it full of tunes that we’re just highlighting for the sake of taking up blog space. Heck, we didn’t even run this column last month because we couldn’t find enough good tuneage (oh no - was that kid from Central Track right?!). That being said, we want to showcase songs that we actually like, and sometimes it takes a while to accrue three of ‘em. It’s mid-to-late January, though, and we’ve got a batch. They’re pretty darn good, too. Click through to find tunes from Criminal Birds, The Infamists and SpoOky Folk.

WHAT WE DID: JANUARY 27TH

Our buds over at Pan Ector moved out of their space on Piner St. They
turned a normally humdrum event into a party complete with beer and plenty
of T-shirt printing. Check out one of their awesome new Denton designs
below. We hear that you'll be able to buy some from The DIME Store soon!

What the hell, Dentonites? Two days in which the temperature gauge goes above 70 and y'all turn into a bunch of drunks? I guess that's cool. We had margaritas, too. And I think there's a Denton stereotype about our collective penchant for booze and abnormally high alcohol-tolerance (we've seen some friends go five old(er) fashioneds deep at Paschall and not bat an eye (bye the way, that's approximately thirty minutes of drink prep for those five drinks if our math is correct). That said, there's a lot of pictures of booze below. So, if you're reading this on a Monday morning, you might get a bit jealous. Thanks again for tagging your weekend good times with #WDDI and we'll see you again next Monday with your Denton weekend adventures.

FRIDAY VIDEO THREESOME

Dudes, it's Friday again. This sure seemed like a long week for one that started off on a holiday. Oh well, the weekend is here and 5pm is only eight and a half hours away. You can do it. We can help. Below are three WDDI hand-picked videos for your viewing amusement. We've got Midlake's new video for "The Old & the Young," a video from Denton's first Help-Portrait the other week, and some sort of weird mood setting video for this year's "Denton Mafia" thingamajig that we had not heard of until this year (but are now extremely excited about).

We love this new video for Midlake's new single, "The Old and The Young," from their new(ish) album, Antiphon

Above is the Behind the Scenes video from January 11th's Help-Portrait: Denton. The next event will be held December 6th, 2014, but you can follow along and find out how you can help by following them on their Facebook page. The video was shot and edited by the always awesome Ryan Polly. You can check out more of his work on his website

We're still not exactly sure what Mafia 2014 is, but we loved watching this video featuring parts of Denton as a scenic backdrop and we now know that if we happen to see people dressed in mafia regalia between January 27th - February 1st, that we shouldn't freak out. That's about it. You can find out more at this website

Does anyone else want to cut their face off, set it on fire, and subsequently bury it? This has got to be the absolute worst allergies have ever been. Actually, that's something we say about once a year at about this time when our noses start to get runny. Some tips to get through this tough time include Benadryl, Tylenol PM, tea, water and as much sleep as you can fit in your schedule. There are massive amounts of incredible things coming down the pipeline - it truly does feel like we’re all drinking from the fire-hose this time of year.

WHAT WE DID: JANUARY 21st

The weekend weather couldn't have been more perfect. And we took advantage of every moment since we heard that the dreaded cold may be working its way back into town. It seems like y'all did too. Movie nights at Oak Street, waffles from the waffle wagon and rides on mopeds seemed to be abounding. Hope you enjoyed your three day weekend as much as we did. Keep your eyes peeled for the Den10 tomorrow and a list of events to partake in this weekend - we wouldn't want you to get bored or anything.

Don't forget to tag your pics with #wddi throughout the week to be included next Monday!
