Stoke is a co-working and entrepreneurial center in Denton, TX that plays host to a hotbed of some of Denton's most creative folks working in the tech scene. In this collaborative series, we speak with some of they key people that put in work at Stoke. In February, we spoke with President of TechMill and Drupal developer, Kyle Taylor. This month, we pick the two minds behind Shepherd Dog: Brandy Thomas and David Brunow. Shepherd Dog works with small businesses and non-profits to help them with technology services such as websites and app development. We talked with them about items such as working closely with a partner, their favorite small business projects, and whether or not they could win in an arm wrestling match with Kyle Taylor. In Tending Bar, we like to take a moment and get to know those folks behind the counter at your favorite bar, coffee shop, juice bar, or other beverage-making establishment. Afterall, you probably see these friendly faces more often than you'd like to admit and there's a lot more to them than just the way that craft their drinks. Roy Robertson is a barista at Cultivar Coffee. One could easily make the argument that the little shop on Hickory St. inside of a doughnut store serves some of the best coffee in town (definitely top three). Robertson is also a musician (you probably know him best from the recently defunct Denton band Pageantry) and just an all around solid dude. We stopped by Cultivar last week to talk with Robertson and grab a few photos of him at work to document his process. Read on for more...
Read MoreWHAT WILL HAPPEN IN DENTON IN 2017?
We wrote about half of a Looking Back at 2016 in Denton post and then deleted it. We can really only write about how much we like Boca 31 and Komodo Loco and dislike construction on University so much before we start to repeat ourselves. Instead, we decided to look forward into the future. What does the near future (nay present) have in store for Denton? We have a few things in mind. Some are a little more realistic than others, but anything can happen, right? Take a look through our predictions for 2017 in the post below and add your own predictions in the comments!

The mysterious 1937 disappearance of Amelia Earhart has puzzled the public for almost 80 years, with numerous theories circulating about the vanished celebrity pilot. If you’re a fan of Denton history like I am, then you know there’s no shortage of fascinating people and stories that have their red dirt roots in our groovy little city. Since it is Black History Month, I figured I’d dig out a few tales of legendary locals that are part of our internationally infamous musical heritage that maybe don’t get brought up in conversation often enough. We’ve already talked plenty about our Quakertown story and its lasting legacy in fact and fiction, the importance of Juneteenth Jubilee, our amazing Civil Rights mavens of 1960s integration, and indeed the Legend of Pops Carter in our local music pantheon. Denton digs its tunes, and that’s been true since way back in the day.

Hard to believe we’re already in November, but the cool weather brings lots of fall celebrations to Denton as the holidays quickly approach like a runaway train! Last year’s look at Denton’s Veterans Day Legacy profiled a few notable locals, so we continue the tradition by sharing stories of amazing soldiers from back in the day.

Every now and then we meet someone who stands out among the crowd. In this case, it was Professor Carmen Cruz on Friday June 26, 2015 at the gay marriage rally on the square.
After the Supreme Court Ruling passed, an LGBTQ rally began on the square in which several marriages took place spontaneously. Dr. Carmen Cruz was ready for the decision and helped facilitate these marriages on the Courthouse steps, this is where we noticed her. We asked about her past, her present, and what she sees as a future for equal rights in this special WDDI edition of People of Denton.

Harvest House has been open for about four months now and in that span of time it has quickly become one of Denton's most popular bars. But there's a strange Jekyll and Hyde phenomenon happening at this popular bar and venue that speaks to why the place opens at 10am on weekdays. We spoke with Harvest House's Cafe Manager and juicer of many things, Andie Sterling, about the other half of Harvest House that exists Monday through Friday from 10am - 5pm and why it should possibly be your new daytime hangout.
