DO THE DENTON HOLIDAY LIGHTING FESTIVAL LIKE A PRO
One of our favorite holiday traditions, the Holiday Lighting Festival, is this weekend. The annual free event features music, food, performances, a toy drive, and various other holiday activities. Happening simultaneously to the Holiday Lighting Festival is Wassail Weekend. Dozens of local shops extend their hours and welcome patrons to sample their wassail, a hot cider-like beverage. Wassail Weekend On Friday evening the Downtown Denton square will be shut down to traffic to make way for wassail-guzzling pedestrians to walk around and enjoy all of the festivities. You'll find us circled 'round the tree like the Whos down in Whoville, holding hands and singing with joy. We're not sure who the Grinch is in this situation, though.
If you plan on coming out to sample the wassail and find the joy of the holiday in your cold, black heart, here are our tips and tricks to making sure you get to squeeze as much holiday cheer out of the event as possible.

Will this weekend bring an actual icemaggedon this time? Whatever happens outside, all eyes should be on Michael Gruber and Pete Delkus to see how the “twitter storm” develops (or doesn’t). We’re busy stocking up on toe-warmers and hot coco to get us through a very chilly Holiday Lighting Festival & Wassail Festival this Friday on the Courthouse Lawn.

What a magnificent time it is to be an American citizen. As we stare down the 237th observation of our nation's Declaration of Independence, it's important to remember those inalienable rights written down by Jefferson and Adams. That these truths are self evident, that's how it is. Not how we wish it was, but how we have no choice for it to be. Celebrate this however you can: sparklers in the streets, a house show, eating for 'Merica, staying on your couch and watching Wall-E, do it however you see fit. Get to the highest point you can get and watch the burning-magnesium light up the air and fall back to the earth as Souza is blaring from the general direction of Apogee Stadium. It's mesmerizing watching Denton grow, born from of the spark of freedom and democracy. Celebrate that.

Bring an instrument and get dressed up for this one. Easily one of the most entertaining ways to spend an early July 4th morning is by being in the marching band in the parade on the square. In keeping with tradition, the marching band will continue marching after the parade route ends straight into Dan's which will be graciously serving bloody mary's. Start your holiday off on the right foot.
