SEEN AND HEARD: JUNE 15TH 2015

will milne June 15, 2015

Seen and Heard is our weekly events listing of some of the best family friendly events going on in Denton. Don't let a few rain showers get in the way of doing some of the awesome events that Denton has to offer over the next few days. We've got gardening, summer camps, circuit building, air shows and more!

Tuesday, June 16th

Lil’d Summer Gardening Camp | Calhoun Middle School Garden | Free | 8:30, 9:30am
Explorium Denton hosts this twice-a-week program for children ages 5-7 ad 8-11 at the CMS Garden. Come to any or all sessions, but please let them know you’re coming by emailing info@exploriumdenton.org

Snaps and Squishy Circuits | Emily Fowler Library | Free | 3pm
Learn about electricity! This program is for children ages 8-12 and registration is required.

Wednesday, June 17th

Paper Making | Denton Public Library | Free | 3pm
How is paper made? Is it art or is it science? Find out in this fun program for ages 8-14. Registration is required.

School’s Out Scrap’s In | SCRAP | $20 | 1-4pm
Seriously this is probably the best deal in town. A hump-day treat to break up the monotonous week now that the kids are all at home for the summer. You won’t regret signing your child(ren) up for every session-yep, it’s EVERY Wednesday afternoon!

KSCS Tour | Waterworks Park | $5-11 | 10-3
Country station KSCS 96.3 will be broadcasting from Denton this Wednesday! They’ll be hosting games and giving away prizes from 10-3. If you don’t already have your season pass, regular admission will apply.

Downtown Retail Happy Hour | Denton Square | $ | 3-6pm
Does your family love the shops and eateries downtown? Take advantage of Downtown Retail Happy Hour every Wednesday in June for discounts, specials, and coupons to use at some of your favorite places on the square.

Friday, June 19th

Juneteenth Celebration | Fred Moore Park | Free | 5pm, 9am
Juneteenth marks the historic day in Texas in 1865 when Texans got word that slavery had been abolished. Denton does Juneteenth right with gospel music, a parade, and a softball tournament at this family-friendly celebration. This event is also happening on Saturday.

Saturday, June 20th

Children’s Activities | Denton Community Market | Free | 9-1
Explorium Denton is at the Denton Community Market where your child will be able to take apart electronics without having to put them back together. They call it “Tinkering” but you’ll call it brilliant.

Denton Air Show | Denton Municipal Airport | Free-$12 | 11-4
The Denton Air Show is one of the most exciting events in town. Load up on thrills and snow cones. Take a tour of Hangar 10. Bring your own chair and shade if you’ve got it. Oh-and did you know you can eat breakfast with the pilots at 8:00 for just $4? Those dollars benefit Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home in Denton.

Anyah Martinez is the mother of three busy boys and the founder of Explorium Denton, an emerging children's museum taking shape in Denton.

INTERVIEW WITH HEATHER GREGORY

will milne June 2, 2015

SCRAP Denton is full of reuse pushers. After you've hung out in their new digs on Bell for a while, made a few crafty friends, and taken a couple of classes you kinda get hooked on creative reuse. It can be addictive. With their new location, SCRAP is bigger and better than ever before, and with their upcoming fundraisers, summer camps and more, things only look to be getting better. We recently spoke with lead SCRAPer (our term, not hers), Heather Gregory, to get the low-down on all of the upcoming events happening at SCRAP. Oh, and she gives us insight on who is the craftiest person in Denton, teases an upcoming Mini Maker Faire to be held in Denton this fall, and a whole bunch more because she's busy like that. Read all about it in the interview below.
