INTERVIEW: KANDACE SPRINGS

Last night at Dan's Silver Leaf, Kandace Springs wore her influences on her sleeve with a commanding performance that even illicited a shout of,  "You should run for president!" from the Monday night crowd.

Flanked by Dillion Treacy on drums and Jesse Bielenberg on bass, Springs flexed her musical agility, seamlessly switching between soul, gospel, and blues but somehow always landing solidly on her female jazz vocal influences such as Nina Simone, Billy Holiday and Eva Cassidy. We chatted with Springs a bit before the show about how she got started, influences, and what it is like to have Prince reach out to you via Youtube. Yes, that Prince.

HONY AT UNT

Last night we had the privilege of attending the first event of this year’s UNT Fine Arts Series, an evening with Brandon Stanton, the creator of Humans Of New York. Stanton’s work on the blog turned book was insightful, uplifting, and relevant to anyone who not only works in a creative field, but anyone who feels like they have some major #lifegoals to achieve. He has photographed and interviewed thousands of people, and after his talk we had a chance to sit down and talk about a few things in a little more depth. Read on to find out how his incredible work ethic has driven him to tell the stories of thousands of strangers.

10 WAYS YOGA BENEFITS THE CITY

Our local yogi, Liz King, has nailed down ten reasons that you need more yoga in your life. WHAT WE DID: OAKTOPIA 2016

And here's our second What We Did post of the day. This one is complete with tons of images from this weekend's Oaktopia festival. This was the fourth year of Oaktopia and saw some of the biggest names yet. Artists such as Rae Sremmurd, Beirut, Cat Power, Norah Jones, Andrew W.K., and many more rocked Denton very hard over the course of the three day festival. We'll have a more in depth review out later, but in the meantime, here are a ton of photos for you to check out from Oaktopia.

The images below were shot by WDDI photographers and you, WDDI readers/Instagram taggers. You can click through on those photos to get to their Instagram pages and follow them. Check our all of the images below and let us know your favorite part of Oaktopia in the comments! Ours was the brief (but heavy) rain shower on Saturday evening. Search Instagram and Twitter for #Soaktopia to see what we're talking about.

WHAT WE DID: SEPTEMBER 26TH 2016

Well that was a weekend for the books. Oaktopia 2016 took over downtown Denton for the fourth year in a row and had plenty of great moments. In fact, there were so many of those moments, that we'll have a whole post full of 'em later on today. In the meantime, we've got plenty of great non-music festival images from last week in our weekly photo round up post, What We Did.

Every Monday, we take a look through all of the images that have been tagged #WDDI (We Denton Do It) on Instagram and post a few that showcase what life was like in Denton that week.

If you'd like to have your image selected for What We Did, make sure to tag your Instagram photos with #WDDI. Glen has been telling people that if they give him a dollar he can make it happen, but that's just a lie.
