AN AFTERNOON WITH THE MAESTRO

Anshel Brusilow is not an official resident of Denton, but few commuters have had the impact that the Maestro has had on the city and the University of North Texas. In a recent event at the Murchison Center, the Maestro appeared with co-author Robin Underdahl to discuss their book, Shoot the Conductor: Too Close to Monteux, Szell, and Ormandy.

Talking in hushed tones that belie their excitement, the members of a diverse crowd of fans spread out amongst the cozy corners of one of the Murchison Center’s pristine rooms. Every now and then, a student or faculty member sneaks a glance over towards the door, only to be disappointed. Several moments of tangible anticipation pass before the Maestro enters.

Walking with an entourage that includes friends, his wife, and author Robin Underdahl, Maestro Anshel Brusilow turns every head as he surveys the room from floor to ceiling.

“Ah, yes, I remember this room. We had a lot of good rehearsals in here. Violent rehearsals.”

Chuckles are heard throughout the throng of admirers, and Maestro Brusilow grins from ear to ear. Click through to read about UNT legend, Anshel Brusilow, and how his return to discuss the his award-winning memoir and his “three lives.”

WHAT WE DID: NOVEMBER 9TH

Another packed week in Denton. The DIME Store had their Handmade Harvest, we got to check out Summit Gym, people showed up at 7:30 a.m. for an InstaDFW photo-meet, and much more. We're sure the beautiful November weather helped to put us all in good moods. Although, the less-beautiful November allergies are kind of kicking our butt right now. Oh well. 72 degree weather makes it worth it.

Below are 19 photos from the past seven days of life in Denton, TX. We do this every Monday and call it What We Did. Photos are by both We Denton Do It readers and staffers.

If you'd like to be included in What We Did, tag your images with #WDDI on Instagram, and check back here next Monday. As always, we're limited in the photos we can post, but we encourage you to search the hashtag #WDDI and check out all of the other awesome photos that we were unable to include this week. Click the images below to be led back to the photographer's Instagram page.

WHAT WE DID: NOVEMBER 2ND

Well, that sure was spooky. Denton, you go all out with costumes. We saw ghosts, ghouls, goblins, Trumps, pumpkins, pumpkin-Trumps, and about a half dozen or so Leslie Knopes out on the streets this weekend. Also, let's take a quick aside to talk about how hard Sundown Blvd. at Ranchman gets down on Halloween. We heard tell of this block of houses that go all out and decided to trek over to South Denton to see what all of the fuss was about and we were not disappointed. Streets covered in fog, men with chainsaws chasing teenagers, and houses decorated to the nines were just a few of the things that make that area a trick-or-treaters paradise. We will definitely hit it up next year. Y'all know of any Denton neighborhoods that have them beat in terms of All Hallow's Eve?

What We Did is our weekly roundup of photos that WDDI staff and readers have taken over the past seven days. We've got 22 of our favorite images from the past week in Denton, TX below. Most of 'em are Halloween-specific (how could they not be?), but you'll find a few non-spooky ones there, too.

Have a great week!

WHAT WE DID: DENTON DAY OF THE DEAD 2015

Whenever we have a bunch of photos from a certain event, we like to break What We Did into two posts. Denton's annual Day of the Dead Festival has a habit of being awesome and generating lots of photo-ops and this year wasn't any different. So, here's your second What We Did post of the day, featuring plenty of images of this weekend's spooky festivities (it is a little heavy on coffin racing, but that isn't exactly a problem).

While the rain may have seemed like it put a damper on Saturday's festivities, people still came out in droves to get their face painted, take in some racing, and watch Cirque Du Horror. Personally, we enjoyed Scott Porter's role as the announcer of the Coffin Race again this year. Our particular favorite quote was, "Control, ALT, Defeat!"
