PIZZA SNOB

We often find ourselves thinking that Denton needs more great restaurants. Mostly this is because Denton just plain old needs more great restaurants. Now, don't get us wrong. This isn't a slam to our current restaurant scene, but as a person who eats out a good deal, less is not more when it comes to choosing where to have dinner. We have often caught ourselves saying, "we need more restaurants, just not more pizza or burgers," but boy were we wrong. Pizza Snob, Denton's newest dough and cheese slinger,  just opened off the square on Hickory St. at the base of H Squared. If you haven't been yet, head over the check them out. If you want to know what they're up to and what to try, read on.

POOL PARTY PICS

Last Friday evening, we held a pool party / cannonball contest at Denton's Civic Center Pool to raise funds for the Denton Parks Foundation. This weekend was not only the last weekend of the season for the pool to be open, but also the very last weekend of all time for the diving board. The pool will be renovated this year and the new plans do not accommodate a diving board. To give it a proper sendoff, we planned a cannonball contest. The event saw folks of all ages swing by to see how big of a splash they could make (both literally and figuratively) and it quickly devolved from cannonballs to jack knifes and belly flops. By the end of the night we were able to raise almost $600 for the Denton Parks Foundation. The money will go towards the Eureka 2 project which you can read more about here. Below are a few pics from the festivities on Friday evening.

WHAT WE DID: SEPTEMBER 7TH

Okay, the weather folks are whispering about rain and cold fronts later this week. We're hoping that writing about it won't jinx it 'cause we could sure go for some sub-90 temps right about now. Grilling steaks on Labor Day weekend when the thermometer is buzzing around 100 ain't too fun. Anyway, here's a day late What We Did (it isn't a dollar short, though). We took Labor Day off to eat some baked dough with cheese at Pizza Snob.

What We Did is our weekly roundup of photos that WDDI staff and readers have taken over the past seven days. We've got 21 of our favorite images from the past week in Denton, TX below. In this group, we've got plenty of scenes from our pool party at the Civic Center Pool, new restaurants, live music, and some beautiful pizza shots.

If you'd like to be included in What We Did, tag your images with #WDDI on Instagram, and check back here next Monday. As always, we're limited in the photos we can post, but we encourage you to search the hashtag #WDDI and check out all of the other awesome photos that we were unable to include this week. Click the images below to be led back to the photographer's Instagram page. Have a great week!

BACK IN THE DAY: DENTON COLLEGE MASCOTS

The first sign of fall in Denton ain’t grass turning a slightly lighter shade of sun-bleached tan, but the boisterous return of college students to UNT and TWU. Just as sure as dodging cars hurtling the wrong direction down one-way streets, or watching a learning curve hilariously unfold for back-in parking on East Hickory, these fresh faces to Denton also give us an opportunity to maybe learn a few new things about our two-college town. Since this year is the 125th Anniversary of UNT in Denton, I figured it’d be fun to revisit the purt-near-constant changes in our local university mascots that have bemused locals trying to keep up since back in the day.

SEEKING THE TRUTH IN SOLOMON, TX: A CONVERSATION WITH DAN HAMMOND JR.

Sporting dark sunglasses and sipping black coffee, Dan Hammond’s demeanor calls to mind Tom Robbins– a suggestion that the Denton-based writer would certainly deflect. Stationed at the edge of the bar at West Oak Coffee, the humble Hammond thumbs away at a cell phone that he admits to not fully understanding. “My boys have had to teach me a lot about stuff like this.” He beams whenever we come to the subject of his two sons, and it’s clear that his passion for fatherhood is only matched by his love of writing.
