February is African-American History Month, an important opportunity to look back at Denton’s own intriguing past. Today we’re gonna look at the true facts behind the historical fiction White Lilacs (1993), Carolyn Meyer’s novelization of the forced eviction for Denton’s African-American Quakertown district during the 1920s. The stories behind the story offer critical reminders why Black History Month is so necessary to counter persistent political revisionism to our impaired public memory.

WHAT WE DID: FEBRUARY 9TH 2015
Well, we hit 10,000 all time photos with the #WDDI hashtag last week. That's a lot of photos, y'all. In the past year and a half that we've been running this column, we've really enjoyed combing through all of your beautiful images and we hope that we've introduced you guys to some awesome photographers and that you've enjoyed the photos as much as we have. So, thanks. And here's to another 10,000! Anyways...
What We Did is our weekly roundup of photos that WDDI staff and readers have taken over the past seven days. While we try to keep up with all the awesome stuff going on in town, sometimes we're taken aback by the awesome stuff we didn't even know about - like yoga at Denton's newest brewery.
If you'd like to be included in What We Did, tag your images with #WDDI on Instagram, and check back here next Monday. As always, we're limited in the photos we can post, but we encourage you to search the hashtag #WDDI and check out all of the other awesome photos that were posted that we were unable to post on the blog. Click the images below to be led back to the photographer's Instagram page. Have a great week!

DESIGN DAY: February 12th, 6PM @ The Civic Center
The beloved Eureka park playground in south Denton has been in service for 20 years. It's been through quite a bit of hide and seek and even a little bit of freeze tag. It's time for an upgrade. And who better to come up with a design for the new park than the citizens who know the most about what they want to see in it, children.

UPDATED: ALL OF THE BLOGS!
While we do our darndest to keep you guys up to date on what's going on in Denton, we're by no means the end-all-be-all source of definitive information. After all, there's a lot going on in Denton County. Lucky for you, there's a lot of people in the know who just so happen to enjoy writing about things on the internet (most likely currently unemployed UNT communication majors). We know how much you guys like keeping up with what's going on. We thought we'd throw some links to other Denton news sources, blogs, and the like to help you expand your repertoire. We've done our best to include only currently-operational blogs and websites (things that have been updated at least once in 2015) that are updated on a regular basis. There are plenty of other webites such as Verb Denton, Vote Denton, etc... that offer great information that just didn't fall into our requirements for this post. Follow along with any number of these, and you'll increase your local knowledge tenfold. If you have a particular favorite that isn't included, feel free to list it in the comments!
Read MorePEOPLE OF DENTON: MAX QUIMBY
Have you ever been walking down the street minding your own business, only to find yourself gawking at someone not following our normal, everyday social constructs? Maybe it was a guy wrapped in burlap on a 101 degree summer day, meditating on Big Mike's front stoop. Or maybe it was a stilted unicyclist forging the uphill climb on Scripture Street. Max Quimby is one of those guys. His peculiar hobby is a balancing act, quite literally. Max has become somewhat of a local legend for balancing potted plants, pumpkins, or various small objects on his head whilst en route to his classes at the University of North Texas. Quimby is your quintessential non-conformist and affectionately assumed the identity of “your friendly neighborhood pothead,” a few years ago when he arrived in Little d. Puns aside, our intrigue got the best of us and we had to hear his side of the story as to how his balancing act got started. Read on for more...

It’s another week full of events, openings, readings, and fests in Denton this week. It’s getting hard to pick what the top ten events are every week, but we're pretty sure we nailed it. Have you searched #WDDI on Instagram lately? It’s also full of increasingly great shots of what it is y’all are getting into over the weekend and we're almost to 10,000 all time photos. We live charmed lives. Now if only they’d put the street back where it used to be on Hickory. Rumor is that it will be done in February and lets hope that’s the truth. Get out there, hashtag stuff, and be safe while enjoying the increasingly more pleasant weather.
