...aaaaand the long (much needed) weekend is done. We hope y'all had an awesome Memorial Day. We sure did. It seems as if we all needed a relaxing weekend. We think that Denton truly does the three-day weekend justice. Y'all know how to party and play like pros whether it be catching some live music, being outdoors or eating way way too much chili.

@orangerageous enjoyed a local ale and skinny dip on his three-day weekend. This looks like a public pool, though, so maybe make that dip a bit less skinny.

CHILI COOKOFF

Local brews, hand crafted cocktails, Hares on the Mountain and loads of sunscreen were all a part of the annual Golden Jesus: Chili Cook Off, which has been a Denton mainstay since 2004. Dozens of people gathered to hang out, eat some fine chili and day drink. The photos above were taken by local photographer extraordinaire (and friend of the blog), Shaina Sheaff, whom we interviewed last December.

CROSSFITTING, Y'ALL

The CrossFit craze has swept across Denton, finding its way into small industrial alleys, shopping malls, and sometimes even in your attic (that's what those sounds are). You can find these CrossFit fans sweating it out and shouting loudly while squatting, lifting, and jumping in simple spaces with little else than a set of weights, some rings, bars and a whole lot of dedication. Our very own Glen Farris checked out CrossFit940, the newest even in town and even underwent a "fat test" in a truck with a tub full of water. We spoke with Nate Altes, owner of Crossfit940, to see how CrossFitters prefer to sweat it out. Read on for more!

WDDI: Have you always 'repped the 940? If not, what brought you to Denton?

I'm from Oklahoma originally. I moved to Denton in 2001 for a job and have fallen more in love with this city every day since. The diversity and opportunity while maintaining that small town feel makes this such a great city. And maybe, just maybe someday I-35 will be drive-able.

People are either completely obsessed with CrossFit or asking, "CrossFit? Is that some new kind of Spanx?" What actually is CrossFit?

Um, I think CrossFit is the Anti-Spanx? The name tells the story. I remember when the idea of the cross-trainer shoe came out. The concept was that you could wear one shoe to do multiple types of training. CrossFit is no different. The concept is that you are training to be FULLY fit in the 10 key principles of fitness. From cardio to balance, from agility to accuracy, from endurance to strength (yes, I only listed 6 keys). CrossFit will get you fully fit across all facets of fitness, and it's done using functional and scalable movements, meaning anyone can do it. CrossFit is done in a group class setting so you are training with folks from all walks of life and fitness levels in the same class. I love walking into the gym and seeing a college athlete working out side by side with someone's grandpa. For me personally, having a coach involved in my fitness EVERY time I walked into the gym was huge. The gym can be a very intimidating place for some people but having a knowledgeable coach at your side the whole time teaching and encouraging you creates a comfort level that you won't find anywhere else without paying for a personal trainer.

Why do you think Crossfit has such a cult following?

Ha! "The cult minus the creepy leader!" CrossFit goes against the mainstream conventional wisdom on health and fitness both nutritionally speaking and in terms of its methodology of getting fit. When people buy into a principle that goes against the majority, it tends to create a community or "cult like" group of like minded thinkers. Secondly, CrossFit is hard! It pushes you to your limits both physically and mentally in an effort to make you better. Not everyone is willing to be pushed to those limits, so the folks that do tend to walk around in their CrossFit gear with a little swagger. Without getting too far down the socio psychological rabbit hole, confidence can sometimes be misinterpreted as arrogance and most people don't like arrogance. CrossFit breeds confidence because it changes peoples lives in ways they never thought possible. And frankly, people who don't do CrossFit don't really want to hear you ramble on about CrossFit so we're stuck sharing our experiences in our own little cult. Shaving you're head and getting tattoos are not required.

What did you do before opening CF940?

I actually still own and operate a freight logistics company. CrossFit is more passion than paycheck for me. My business partner and co-owner, Blake Burleson is the general manager and "head coach". He handles the programming, coach training, and daily operations within the gym and I handle the administrative, marketing, and janitorial (my favorite) side of things. Blake has been in CrossFit for many years and has earned a phenomenal reputation in the CrossFit community for his passion in coaching athletes from all fitness levels and for his standards in judging CrossFit competitions. The TWU women's volleyball program affectionately gave him the nickname "El Diablo" in our first year of doing their strength and conditioning program.

How’d you get into the CrossFit business?

I got turned down by my insurance provider 6 years ago. I was 285 pounds and horribly out of shape and my insurance said I was too high risk to cover. Long story short, I lost 80 pounds and completely overhauled my life by doing CrossFit. At that time, CrossFit hadn't gained the notoriety and popularity that it has today so I made it my mission to share my CrossFit success with anyone and everyone that would listen and do my part to spread the greatness of CrossFit to anyone that would take the first step . Watching people change their lives is still my motivation and I love seeing it everyday I walk into the gym.

What’s your business philosophy and how does it relate to your fitness philosophy?

Work smarter not harder. In business, working less hours and getting paid more would seem obvious. It's no different in fitness. CrossFit will completely kick your ass but the results you will see in comparison to the amount of time you spend in the gym are unprecedented. Obviously a large part of this starts with nutrition but the same concept applies. Be smart about what you eat, be smart about how you exercise, and ultimately you will spend way less time in the gym than the millions of folks at the 'globo-gym' walking on treadmills reading a magazine sipping on their sugar filled sports drink. Yeah, I went there.

What are some of the pieces of equipment that you only find in CrossFit gyms?

I think it's probably more about what you WON'T find in a CrossFit gym. No treadmills, we run outside. No ellipticals, we do box steps/jumps. No leg press machines, we do squats. No mirrors, our coaches will tell you if it looks good or not. To be very CrossFit cliche, we don't use machines, we make them.

Can a regular Joe like me get into CrossFit? What's a good route for beginners?

Yes, ANYONE can get into CrossFit. We've trained navy seals, college scholarship athletes, soccer moms, and grandmas. We had a 69 year old woman at our grand opening working out next to 20 year old college athletes. Wanna guess who got most of the cheering? All CrossFit workouts are scalable to the fitness level, mobility, and desired results of the athlete. We have folks come in with preexisting injuries or mobility issues and we can work around those issues by substituting and scaling the workout. Beginners are required to go through our "Elements of CrossFit" classes. These classes are setup to be very coach intensive (which really means that there is an abundance of attention for each person) and will teach the techniques, lingo (you know, our cult's secret language), and nutritional concepts of CrossFit.

What's your fitness regime?

Next question please!!! So before I start listing too many excuses (I have 5 kids, 3 businesses, and my wife is a nurse) I will say that my regime changes weekly. I try to get in a workout at least 3 times a week. Some weeks it's 5, some weeks it's 1. I have said many times that I am the "Fat Man's CrossFit" guy. I will never compete in the CrossFit games or beat you over the head with CrossFit philosophies. I just want you and me to be doing something. If I'm not in the gym, I love an intense game of H-O-R-S-E in the driveway with the kids and I love playing tennis. Simply stated... just move! And no, '12 ounce Corona curls' do not count.

What's your stance on kale?

Usually seated....with a fork....and bacon.

Howsabout yoga?

A large human like myself in yoga pants would probably not end well for anyone in the room but I would definitely give it a ride. Side note, I have done Pilates (I co-own Empower Pilates) and for any dudes who think it's easy "girly" training, give me a shout and I'll hook you up with a free session and then wait for the tears as you're leaving.

What's your least favorite thing about the workout world?

One word.... ego. This is one of the other huge benefits to CrossFit and especially to our CrossFit 940 community. We don't care where you are at in your journey to fitness. You can be 100 pounds overweight and a smoker that brings chocolate brownies and Mountain Dew to the gym everyday. We applaud the fact that you showed up and are taking the steps to improve your well being. I've seen it over and over and over again, the person finishing the workout last, always gets the most encouragement, the most cheering, and the most high fives when they're done. Another CrossFit quote, "Leave your ego at the door and exercise it on your own time, the rest of your body will need your full attention once inside."

DIRTY DENTON DANCING

Trap, EDM, dubstep, techno, electronica, etc… are probably not genres of music we hear all too often in Denton. They aren’t associated with the arms-crossed folk rock offshoot that you see at local venues. Likewise, the underground dance scene in Denton is perhaps so underground that it even goes by unnoticed by even the most in-tune Dentonite.

That leads us to a more important question, though. Do people even like to dance in this town? Or are we too cool, too hip, too busy for that mess? We’d like to think not, and we were able to catch up with a few friends in the DJ dance movement to get a better picture of what dancing Dentonites might (or might not be) looking for:

Andrew Miller (Star Party) and Joey Liechty (DJ Yeah Def) are just a few facilitators out of many in the local dance scene. We recently chatted them up and asked a few questions about the local dance scene. This is what they had to say...

WDDI: Is there still room for dance music in Denton? Like for real?

Miller: Yes, absolutely. I know there are plenty of people here to support the Denton dance scene, because there is a community of people here, and a lot of us just like to dance.

DJ Yeah Def: There is but I’d love to see Denton embrace a Beat/Experimental Electronic scene even more, yet I don’t know if there is any viability to that, but I think it’d be great. There's some great artists in the Lone Star State making excellent tunes that aren't getting the recognition they should be. I'd love to see a sister location to the venue Barcelona pop up on Fry St and just flip the whole script for Fry. If someone put a killer night club on Fry St that wasn't focused on drinking or darts, they'd come out like gangbusters.

Star Party used to be a cover band for Daft Punk, but now you guys are producing your own dance music and lights show. How does the lights play into the dancing when you guys perform?

Miller: We are heavily inspired by machines and lights, and although our inspiration comes from many genres of music, the combined audio visual experience that people have is just as important. We think that when lights and music are combined, it can facilitate an atmosphere where people lose themselves. It’s also more likely for people to dance when they lose their identity in some way. We also like to wear masks, because we like to give up our own identity for the night, in order to let people focus on the music and the experience.

Do the current clubs in Denton do a good job at facilitating dance music?

Miller: Yeah they actually do. They provide the space and the booze, and the rest is left up to us. It’s really fun, and we love putting on a show where people feel comfortable enough to dance.

Yeah Def: Denton has done it very well in some years, and struggled in others. I’d like to think we’re currently in an upswing. Hailey’s was my home for many years, and along with Gloves and Andy’s, I’ve had countless nights playing tunes and having masses of people come out to party. Denton has treated me very well. I feel honored to have an impact in people’s lives.

What are your hopes for the Denton dance scene in the future?

Miller: It would be nice to see all genres of music represented in this city. There is a limited variety as of yet, and I’m excited to see what happens as the city grows. I love that Mulberry Street Cantina just picked up salsa dancing, and I would also love to see more cultural diversity represented in dance.

Yeah Def: I’d like to see a club meet in a middle ground between the three Denton venue archetypes of “Dive Bar” / “Live Music Venue” / “Drinking Backyard.” I feel like a “Barcade” would do very well in Denton. I’m thinking a place to host touring DJs with an excellent sound system, but where you could also play a round of Mario Kart 64 to see who buys the next round.

We sent off our #Sriracha2Denton delegates to impress the big wigs in California with a fun little shindig. We made sure to sport our Pan Ector tees, smile at the cameras and drink plenty of Sriracha-spiked beverages (the "Sriracharita" happened to be our favorite). Oh, and did y'all get a load of Denton's newest iconic location - the "L_l d" outside of Oak St. Drafthouse? There were far fewer people dressed up as "i's" than we figured there would be. Maybe y'all just need another week. As per usual, we loved sifting through your photos of Denton-filled fun. Y'all really know how to take advantage of a weekend full of great weather, friends and plenty of (spicy) booze.

As you're well aware by now, Denton's been trying to lure Huy Fong foods away from Irwindale, CA where a couple of citizens have been complaining about the air near the factory. They recently invited a few city officials to come visit. We sent 'em off in pure-Denton style with a party at Oak St. Drafthouse. While we're on the subject, we got to catch another Roden improptu speech at the event on Friday. With the amount of times that man has to find a chair to stand on, we're thinking we should buy him a pair of stilts and a book on stilt walking and then he can give a speech whenever/wherever. Howsabout it, Roden?

SHORT FILM CLUB SCREENING

On the evening of Saturday, May 3rd, in the UNT's RTVF building, the line for the UNT Short Film Club Spring 2014 screening took up the entire lobby. Over a hundred students and family members gathered to watch the short films produced by the only student organization at the University of North Texas that produces narrative films outside the classroom.

Every semester, students pitch ideas for short films, and the members of the club vote on the best ideas to go into production. This all leads to three individual 10 minute films. The entire crew is comprised of UNT students and alumni, from wildly different backgrounds. All of whom are interested in learning more about film-making. The films are shot on a RED Scarlet Digital Cinema camera, donated by a local filmmaker, and are often paid for by Kickstarter campaigns.

This year, we had a wonderful assortment of films, including a sci-fi drama, a family comedy, and mixed media drama. Juniper (embedded below), tells the story of a girl attempting to save her grandmother from the government’s population control, which features impressive special effects and wonderful performances from Amanda Reyes & Juli Erickson. The Regal Saxton is a screwball comedy about an unusual family tradition: the night before the son’s wedding, the Barrow family robs The Regal Saxton bank. #SavingScott is a fast-paced mixed media montage in which a YouTube celebrity lies about having cancer.

Also screened were the winners of the filmmaking contests. In an effort to encourage students to make more films for themselves, the UNT Short Film Club has increasingly challenging film-making contests throughout the semester, ranging from simple Instagram videos to narrative shorts. Arielle Engle won Best Instagram Video for “Lipstick” about a femme fatale with a twist. German Torres won Best Documentary with “Spinning Fire” a spontaneous documentary about a guy who gets through the stress of the day by spinning fire. Amanda Reyes won Best Non-Sync Sound for her touching, poetic short “Dear Brother” about correspondence with her brother during his time in prison. John Brodie won Best Narrative with “The Woman In White”, an enigmatic film about a woman gone missing.

Due to a technical difficulty, Juniper was unable to screen that night, but a screening of a rough cut of Remoriam more than made up for it. Remoriam, an ambitious short film about a technology that can capture a single moment of your life exactly the way you experienced it, should be finalized soon. The film had the entire audience in tears, thanks to Zion Szot’s brilliant performance as Sam, a terminally ill young girl struggling to decide the perfect moment to capture.

The night concluded with the new president and vice president of Short Film Club surprising those present with a secret video they had been making all semester. Said video featured members of Short Film Club talking about how I had helped them as filmmakers and how much Short Film Club means to them. It was an emotional night, and a very touching way to end my career as president and founder of Short Film Club.

Our friends in the band Chambers are about to drop their new album Inner Room on June 10th via The Record Machine. In fact, as they gear up for the big release, they're interviewing their buddies about the new album. We asked them a couple of questions about the new album, their evolving sound - and their newest marketing campaign (which you can.

WDDI: What was your experience writing your new album?

Judson Valdez: Making this album was a new experience for all of us I think. As it is our first as a band, making it really was a struggle to establish what we want to be. Sometimes that led to arguments and fits, but overall, it really is what brought us together as a band. There is something special and difficult about taking a bunch of pieces and ideas that are so personal, bringing them to a group of people and saying, "how about this?" I think we all had to learn to work together in that regard.

It's kind of like writing this super passionate love letter to you high school crush, spending hours and hours struggling to get the right words in hope that she will understand and think you're super cool, and then before you give it to her, you ask your friends to read over it and tell you what they think, and then they respond, " yeah, that's pretty good but what if you did this instead?"

What inspired your new marketing campaign?

As strange as it might sound, we aren't always serious and moody, even though our music may portray otherwise. Most of our time together is either serious brooding (myself especially) or joking around and playing joke cover songs. So when we were talking ideas to promote the album, we thought it might be fun to show our other side a little since our music is so serious. Our close circle of friends is mostly made up of musicians, artists, photographers etc. and when we all get together we spend a lot of time joking around about the things we take most seriously, kind of a release I suppose. So when we asked our friends to go on camera and make fun of us, they were very easily won over to the idea.

How would you describe your new album in 140 characters or less?

An attempt to give the best and worst parts of us to everyone else. It's a big risk, but hopefully it will be worth taking.

Y'all seemed to be more interested in drinking beer than voting last week. When it's Armadillo Ales' Brunch Money, we guess that makes sense. Maybe next local election they'll pass out free bottles of the stuff instead of little "I Voted" stickers. Who knows? Weirder things have happened.

Either way, the election has come and gone. Chris Watts won the mayoral election, Dalton Gregory took Place 5, Greg Johnson took Place 6, and John Ryan won District 2. We're still pushing right along, though. We're a little bummed that we couldn't get the average voting age below 60, but oh well. The plan is to embrace it - we'll add a monthly AARP column and a Denton Guide to Colonoscopies. Yay, the future! The election didn't stop anyone from taking photographs, though. We've got a slew of #WDDI tagged photos below. Breeze through them this rainy Monday and go get us some sweet storm pics, y'all.
