BACK IN THE DAY: CIVIL RIGHTS MAVENS OF INTEGRATION

Dr. E.D. Moten and family, physician to Denton’s early 1900s Quakertown.

February’s Black History Month is a time to reflect upon the long struggle of human rights for African-Americans, which may make you wonder about Denton’s own Civil Rights legacy. As you might expect by now, Denton has never really fit the mold of what you’d usually anticipate from those divisively troubled times, but there is definitely a heroic story to tell about the Denton Christian Women’s Interracial Fellowship [CWIF]. While many took to the streets and thundered from podiums during the turbulent 1960s, a plucky coalition of Denton mavens quietly decided to forge their own unusual plan for local desegregation and racial integration from within their own living rooms.

INTERVIEW: AARON ANDERSON OF LUMBERJACK FEST

Tonight marks the start of the 10th installation of Lumberjack Festival, one of Denton's most beloved events. What started as a fundraiser for a DIY literary magazine, has become a two day event of some of the best musicians this town has to offer. We spoke with festival organizer, Aaron Anderson, to give us some history, insight, and a little glimpse into how it came about. Heck, he even told us how there was once almost a chainsaw artist carving a giant bear in front of Dan's. Oh, what could have been...

SOUPERFICIAL: THE BEST SOUPS IN DENTON

The khao soi from Thai Ocha

Okay, first off, let's go on a little rant. Chili is not soup. In a recent in-house WDDI discussion on soup, one of our members (who shall remain nameless) suggested a chili and a pot pie for best soup. Neither of those things is a soup. I'm not going to take the time to Google the definition of soup because I'm steadfast in my belief that chili is not soup and no amount of factual-based information could sway me. So shut up about your chilis. I wanna talk soup.

It's cold out y'all. Like frostbite cold. You know what's awesome when it's super cold outside? Putting your pants in the dryer on high for ten minutes and then putting them on. I'm not sure there's a better feeling in life than really hot pants on a really cold morning. But just below that, soup is also really awesome when it's cold outside. So, let's talk about it for a while.

We thought long and hard about what Denton has to offer in terms of soup and came up with a list of five soups that we can honestly recommend to you. Eat 'em while it's still cold. Soup is more difficult during Texas summers.

THE DEN10: FEBRUARY 5TH

This week's events include a really solid mix of lecture, comedy, and rock shows. There’s a diversity that Denton’s possesses that will remain it’s strength for years to come. As we stand on the verge of the largest growth the town has ever seen, it will become necessary more than ever for people to stand up and lead. Whether it’s putting together a comedy show in your backyard or signing up for Mentor Denton, the need will always be there and your community will always need you. Part of what We Denton Do It’s mission has been is to encourage civic participation and engagement because we believe that the more people who are throwing their hat in the ring to help out, the better our town is, the safer our neighborhoods are and a more just society will emerge from that. Sometimes it gets messy, but messy is much better than waking up in a few years to a town that’s lost its way, lost its culture, lost its tacos, and lost its identity. So, get out there and make Denton a place where our community can thrive. In fact, lets leave this place better than we found it because that’s the right thing to do.

LOCAL POLITICS: GLEN FARRIS FOR DENTON

MAIN PIC.jpg

We here at WDDI pride ourselves on civic engagement and education for helping to create a strong local electorate. We believe in people being a part of their local government, getting involved with city committees, citizens educating themselves, mini-cinnamon rolls and all sorts of other "fun" stuff. We love when people take a part in that change. Especially when it includes stuff like signage, right?
