Denton has a great rap scene that often goes unnoticed and under-appreciated by the majority of show-goers. You probably already know some of the larger hip-hop artists in town, like AV the Great, Ritchy Flo, Wild Bill, Stu Brootal or Elijah Heaps. A few of them might be referred to as OG's of the Lil d rap scene, but there's another younger group of kids creating drug-addled beats with nerd-centric, indie rap lyrics who deserve to get some attention. So, this month we're talking about a few of these artists, specifically J3's Journal, Lil Durt and Xanni.

Instead of throwing that cardboard coffee sleeve into the recycling bin, why not wear it as a bracelet or a leg warmer? Sound weird? That's the type of thinking that went into the creation of Denton's Trashion Fashion Program. The award-winning program is now in its fifth year. The City of Denton's Solid Waste and Recycling Department, SCRAP Denton, Keep Denton Beautiful and a few other awesome local organizations use the Trashion Fashion initiative to invite designers of all ages to create clothing (or what they call "wearable art") from materials that would otherwise end up recycled or in a landfill. At the same time, the program also promotes recycling and creative reuse. College fashion design students enter, as well as primary/secondary school students, and adults. Every year, they see designs that really earn that "wearable art" title. This year is one of the most impressive we've seen as far as designs and photography goes. Read on to see a small preview of this year's show.

You could also say it might say it marks the blossoming of Denton's new LPFM radio station, KUZU 92.9, which is aiming to capture the essence of our local music scene all in one place. While KNTU 88.1, "The One," will always be a local favorite, it focuses largely on representing jazz and classical music without touching on the overwhelming amount of amazing and unique music coming from our small town. Read on to find out more about Kuzu and Kuzuthon!

As part of the Distinguished Lecture Series, the one and only Bill Nye the Science Guy graced Denton with his presence in the UNT coliseum, to have a chat about all things science, with a few thousand students on Wednesday night. Covering topics such as sundials, global warming, and rovers on Mars, Bill entertained and educated, just the way we remember his afternoon show as children of the 90’s. We've gathered a few fun facts shared by that Bunsen burner toting, bow-tie wearing scientist who believes that “the joy of discovery is the essence of science” just for you, so that you can keep reliving the science-y goodness all weekend.
