HYPNOTIC: DONUT EVER LEAVE US

Words and Images by Will Milne

We've been super excited about Hypnotic Donuts and Cultivar Coffee Bar opening in Denton since November of last year. People have conceived and given birth to children since then, y'all. Wednesday, they will finally open their doors to all of us clamoring for fun donuts, wonderful coffee, chicken biscuits, and more (we haven't had the chance to try their salads or poutine yet).

Sunday, they held a soft-opening in which customers could grab a free donut and glass of beer or wine. People responded. There was a line down the block. Also, it was hot. We waited for while after thinking we were smart getting there fifteen minutes early, but apparently in Denton, everyone is smart. They had a double super secret opening before the soft-opening, but we weren't invited to that (whine). Oh well. The wait was worth it. We grabbed an Evil Elvis, Breaking Bad, and a straight up glazed (requested by the six year old in our party). All of which lived up to the hype.

The Breaking Bad was a chocolate donut with caramel icing and sea salt. The flavors all coalesced perfectly and had just a hint of saltiness which we loved. The Evil Elvis featured peanut butter, bacon and banana all on a yeast-raised donut and was a meal unto itself which we'd rather have than a sandwich any day. The comfortable pillow-like consistency of each donut had us already feeling nostalgic for this place that hasn't even opened yet

Cultivar is also one of our favorite coffee roasters in DFW and didn't disappoint in their new Denton location. They're rocking a La Marzocca espresso machine and the cold brew was on point - it had us awake until 9:15pm (with a combo of donuts and red wine, this is saying something). The space is nice, bright and can easily accommodate a line, which we're guessing they will have quite a bit. The little patio area outside will also be fun. And if you eat too many donuts, Sprockets is next door - just hop on over, buy a bike/helmet and work off them carbs (might as well buy a cupcake from NV while you're at it, though)!

Below are a few of our shots from the soft-opening on Sunday. Hypnotic Donuts and Cultivar Coffee Bar will open for good in Denton on this Wednesday, September 3rd at 7am. We're probably gonna be there.

WHAT WE DID: SEPTEMBER 2nd 2014

It's the Tuesday after Labor Day so we hope y'all aren't wearing white this morning. That was an eventful seven days of fun, wasn't it? It's still going strong, too. Great photos yet again this week, everybody. How could they not be, though, when you had so many awesome things to take photos of. East Side turned 1, Hypnotic previewed some donuts, and 35 Denton woke from it's slumber at Hailey's. Lots of fun stuff going on this week, too. Check tomorrow's Den10 to find out what.

Until then, remember to tag your images with #WDDI to be included in our weekly What We Did column, check out the images below and click on them to be led back to the photographer's Instagram account, and make some new friends. Have a great week, everybody!

WHAT WE DID: AUGUST 4th 2014

This weekend was one for the books. Late nights full of drinks, oysters with friends, beignets and lattes midday, free coffee pour-overs by Cultivar Coffee at our favorite used book store, and generally trying to enjoy every ounce of less than 95 degree weather while it lasted (oh, and other non-food stuff, too). According to your pictures, y'all had some fun this weekend, too.

As always, thanks for sharing your weekend with us and keep on tagging those 'grams with #wddi! Click on the photos, themselves, to be linked back to the photographer's Instagram account.

WHAT WE DID: JUNE 21st 2014

The polar vortex has come and gone, but wasn't it nice while it was here? We loved having 60 and 70 degree temps in the middle of July - even if it was only for a few days. But now, we're back to steamy days and sunshine all around. We won't complain though, we'll take this over 105 degree days for two months straight. And the thoughts of those days when we were iced in to our homes last December have us doing our best to not complain. But we sure enjoyed being outside and enjoying the cool while it was here. Seems as if y'all did too by the looks of a few photos.

REVIEW: WHEN WE WERE ALL BRONCOS

Members of Denton High School's 1972 football team are shown above in an image from “When We Were All Broncos,” a documentary about Denton High during the era of desegregation.

Dentonites were abuzz at the Thin Line Film Festival this past February over the debut of the Denton-centric WHEN WE WERE ALL BRONCOS documentary, which chronicles the 1968-1973 school desegregation process alongside the Denton High School football team’s epic race to the ’72-73 state championship. Native son and filmmaker David Barrow, who wowed audiences with a poignant record-breaking premiere, has been honored by our city council who resolved last week that today, July 15th, would be named "David Barrow Day" because of his great work on the film. In honor of the new dubbing this day has received, we're running WDDI contributor Shaun Treat's review of the documentary which you can read below. If you haven't had the chance to check it out yet, you can grab a copy over at Recycled Books. Our town’s story of school desegregation is indeed uniquely remarkable, offering a glimpse into how those racially troubled times played-out a bit differently in Denton back in the day. Read on for more...

Barrow’s documentary is definitely a labor of love devoted to his hometown, but it is also careful to acknowledge that racial desegregation was neither easy nor immediate. Through interviews with townspeople, his fellow students at Denton High School, and his teammates on the 1972-73 Bronco football team at their 40th reunion, Barrow tries to understand how Denton emerged from the dark days of Jim Crow racial segregation to become the diverse and dynamic center for education, the arts, and multiracial Texas culture it is today. African-American students across Denton County had attended Fred Moore High School in Southeast Denton until the 1968-9 desegregation of Denton High School brought them all under one roof. Although the main narrative traces the amazing state championship bid of its racially integrated football team, When We Were All Broncos also tells the story of the students, educators, and community who rallied around the shared challenges they faced despite – or sometimes because of – their differences.

In 1954, the same year as the groundbreaking SCOTUS Brown v Board of Education ruling, educator Alfred Tennyson Miller quietly petitioned North Texas State University to enroll in a doctoral course. "It is my conviction that my entrance now would contribute much to the successful, inevitable integration of Negroes into the school," Miller wrote. It wasn’t until a lawsuit the following year by Joe Atkins, who had been denied undergraduate admission, that US District Judge Sheehy issued an injunction prohibiting the school from race-based admission policies. Irma E.L. Sephas became the first African-American undergraduate student at North Texas in 1956, officially initiating racial desegregation. 1956 also saw Abner Hayes and Leon King begin integration of the NTSU football team under the visionary leadership of Head Coach Odus Mitchell and his assistants Fred McCain, Herb Ferrill, and Ken Bahnsen, whose away-games sometimes involved angry mobs pelting their bus with rocks and bottles or refusal to accommodate the team with food or boarding. Such prejudice only brought the team closer together in solidarity, a full 10 years before the Southwest Conference desegregated college football.

UNT students chant "We Shall Overcome" as a quiet crowd of 1,750 students, faculty members, administrators and religious leaders gathered on the Union Building patio to begin a memorial service march for the slain Civil Rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Yet there were also some ugly incidents at home, where African-American students lived in the segregated neighborhoods of Southeast Denton because they were still denied on-campus housing, racial epithets chalked on NTSU sidewalks had to be washed away, and burning crosses appeared not only in front of the administration building but also the house of NTSU President J.C. Matthews. A peaceful 1961 student stand-in at the still-segregated Campus Theatre was also marred by drive-by gunshots, but by then the arc of history was clear to many Dentonites. As racial violence and Civil Rights resistance in other cities became a nightly news item, the Denton City Council in 1963 declared city facilities and programs open to all races, and the integration mavens of the Denton Women’s Christian Interracial Fellowship began their own community movement.

By the time the Fred Moore High School closed in 1968 to integrate with DHS, the same year that MLK then RFK were tragically assassinated, Barrow’s eighth-grade class had little idea they would be making history. "One of the things I always thought about was how lucky we were,” Barrow marvels; “It was a special time. You think what a small group of people actually straddle that time before and after desegregation, it makes you think. And I wanted to go back and not just kind of reminisce about that team, but also look at the history of Denton.” Barrow has arranged to donate a sizeable portion of profits to the Denton Public School Foundation, with the goal of creating a $10,000 permanent endowment towards an annual scholarship to a deserving DHS senior. When We Were All Broncos tells an incredible story of turbulent times confronted with challenges and change, and a school system that forged a unique path through racial desegregation on its way to its first state football championship showdown in 43 years. While acknowledging the shortcomings and struggle familiar to that era, Barrow’s film nonetheless provides a gripping history wherein it was Denton that eventually emerged as the triumphant winner, thanks to our committed community champions.

The "Polar Vortex" is supposed to be back this week and cool things down a bit. We couldn't be happier. Once those 100+ degree temps reared their ugly heads, it almost had us melting. We forget how hot Denton summers are until they actually show up. Oh, well. At least sno-cones exist, right?

WHAT WE DID: JUNE 30

You don't get too many opportunities to re-imagine an abandoned part of a city. Especially in such a major way as we were able to this weekend with Better Block Denton. It was a full-on community effort of volunteers, activists, neighborhood folks, and just good hearted people who want to see the best in their community stand out and shine. Of course, it was led by Jason Roberts who has done the same for many areas that have gone on to keep up some of the playfulness that Better Block brought. We'll have a more major re-cap on all of that action later (y'all took too many photos of it to fit 'em all in What We Did), but for now we just wanted to say that we had an absolute blast watching kids splash around, pups sniff out all-natural treats, librarians hold storytime, and so much more.

Beyond that, this past week saw some great shows, some fun storms and plenty of tacos. Thanks for showing off how you enjoyed this past week by tagging your 'grams with #WDDI. Party on, Denton!

Better Block was such a fun time and we received so many photos, it's gonna get its own post later on today. Until then, here's a pic of idea-man, Jason Roberts in front of the splash park.

WHAT WE DID: JUNE 23RD 2014

We're damned close to hitting 4,000 #WDDI tags on Instagram (as of this post it's within 50). We thought we wouldn't get to that number what with this weekend's rain and all, but a little rain never stopped Dentonites from having a good time. Especially in the summertime when living is easy, right? Just as always, y'all seemed to be everywhere over the wet weekend. Keep on taggin' those 'grams with #WDDI and we'll see you back here next week when we hit 4,000 tags!

A little rain may move us inside, but when the inside gives you bourbon and a great view that ain't such a bad thing.
