Few local ordinances have such a daily effect on our lives as those which govern our driving behavior. Even as Denton builds more bike lanes and paths, and bus service changes to accommodate areas of more dense growth, many of us still drive on a daily basis. The Denton City Council first passed an ordinance governing cell phone use while driving in 2014. The ordinance was largely promoted and understood to be a ban on texting. Late in 2016, some sizeable amendments were passed to this ordinance which are scheduled to take effect on June 1st. That’s just in time for the lesser-known holidays of National Go Barefoot Day, New Year’s Resolution Recommitment Day, or Oscar The Grouch Day. Perhaps more applicable though, it also happens to be International Children's Day, and whether we react to these changes with “Finally!” or “Get your grubby government hands off my steering wheel!”, we can all hope this ordinance results in increased safety for children in Denton. Read on to find out how these changes will affect you!

On Saturday, May 6th, cities all over Texas held elections for local city councils, school boards, mayors, and propositions. Those who voted decided some key issues for those who didn’t. As Jon Stewart quipped, “It is perhaps a sign of the strength of our republic that so few people feel the need to participate. That must be the reason.” For those who did vote, pat yourself on the back – you are unfortunately the exception that proves the rule of anemic local vote turnout.
But I get it. Election day was double-booked with the Cinco de Mayo parade and festivities! It was free comic book day! Actually, it was — don't tell me you skipped the polls AND didn't get a free comic book? Read on to learn what key decisions were made and how it will affect the future of Denton!

As you find your self staring down the barrel of another Valentines Day, consider these events for your weekend plans. All of them have been painstakingly hand-picked for quality and diversity. The most important event this coming week is the 64th House District Republican Primary Debate we’re hosting at Dan’s Silverleaf on Monday at 7PM. City councilman Kevin Roden will moderate and Glen Farris will keep time. This is a pretty unique event as it is possibly the only debate for the state level position that is open to the public (with access to beer, no less). The event will be live-streamed and we encourage you to come out and check out the candidates, one of which will most likely take the HD64 seat. Take your photos and get in the know, y'all.
