STOKE TURNS ONE!

Let’s be clear about one thing: Denton is nowhere near Silicon Valley.

Obviously this is true geographically, but it’s also true in the sense that people’s experiences in the tech industry in Denton are nothing like what you’ll find in the news or in TV shows like Silicon Valley.

The tech industry in Denton actually provides a refreshing counterpoint to some of the problems that plague Silicon Valley (i.e. lack of diversity, allegations of sexual harassment, etc..). This is reflected in the existence of places like Stoke, a co-working space and entrepreneurial center that opened in 2016. The people who choose to work at Stoke also reflect an ethos of consideration for the larger community. Read on to find out how you can help Stoke celebrate their one year anniversary later this week!

WHAT WE DID: DECEMBER 28TH 2015

The week in between Christmas and New Year's is pensive in nature by default, but when you have neighboring towns that have suffered tornado damage on the day after Christmas, it becomes even more so. If you're in a position to help, you can go to redcross.org or text "REDCROSS" to 90999 to automatically donate $10.

You'll see signs of the strange weather Denton experienced last week in the images below. What We Did is our weekly roundup of photos that WDDI staff and readers have taken over the past seven days. We've got 18 of our favorite images from the past week in Denton, TX below.

If you'd like to be included in What We Did, tag your images with #WDDI on Instagram, and check back here next Monday. As always, we're limited in the photos we can post, but we encourage you to search the hashtag #WDDI and check out all of the other awesome photos that have been tagged with #WDDI.

Author, game show host, and comedian Steve Harvey is investing in Denton's newest venue, Harvest House. The 58 year old actor is no stranger to Denton. HOW TO PARK ON HICKORY ST. WITH JOEY HAWKINS (VIDEO)

Hickory St. has recently made the change to back in angle parking and many Denton citizens are having a few issues with it. We first reported on the change way back in July of 2013. At the time, many were excited about the additional parking and safety measures that the adjustment would bring about. That said, since Hickory St. has reopened, many have been having difficulty parking in this fashion and about 25% of people haven't been doing it at all. We reached out to city council district 4 representative, Joey Hawkins, to see if he could teach us how to back in angle park.
