TENDING BAR: ROY ROBERTSON

In Tending Bar, we like to take a moment and get to know those folks behind the counter at your favorite bar, coffee shop, juice bar, or other beverage-making establishment. Afterall, you probably see these friendly faces more often than you'd like to admit and there's a lot more to them than just the way that craft their drinks. Roy Robertson is a barista at Cultivar Coffee. One could easily make the argument that the little shop on Hickory St. inside of a doughnut store serves some of the best coffee in town (definitely top three). Robertson is also a musician (you probably know him best from the recently defunct Denton band Pageantry) and just an all around solid dude. We stopped by Cultivar last week to talk with Robertson and grab a few photos of him at work to document his process. Read on for more...

NEW FOOD AT WEST OAK

West Oak Coffee Bar invited us to try out some of their new menu. Being the gluttonous, hungry folk we are, we could never turn down such an offer. They said a bunch of stuff to us while we were there, but we mostly just heard "pie" a couple of times and nodded our heads a lot. We went back a few days later to talk to new kitchen co-manager, Benjamin Davidson, about the menu and what's coming up for West Oak Coffee Bar.

TENDING BAR: WADE MATHENY

In Denton, baristas are everywhere. Take a look to your left, there's probably one there beside you right now. Or even behind you. Watch out! In fact, chances are, you might even be a barista. See what we mean? Who are these people anyway? They are people, after all, real people - with hopes, dreams, and stories. They have more to offer than just your frothy, espresso drinks and iced vanilla mochas. So, that is why we are setting out to learn more about our beloved baristas - to interview them and learn about the people behind the bar. Sure, the coffee you made me today is from the Yirgacheffe region in Ethiopia, but tell me barista, what is your origin?

THE ALWAYS UPDATED GUIDE TO THE DENTON COFFEE SCENE

The coffee game in Denton has drastically changed in the past two years. Seven Mile Coffee started the shift to third-wave coffee almost three years ago (if we're ignoring The Hydrant), but since then, the local coffee scene has expanded in size almost exponentially with Shift, West Oak Coffee Bar, Big Mike's, Cultivar, The Whitehouse, and even a few more opening shop in town. Having so many options can be a little stressful - especially if you're the type who doesn't just pick and spot and stick with it. All of the new shops have their own specific strengths. Below, we've got a bit of a Choose Your Own Adventure tour of the Denton coffee scene in the spring of 2015, let's get to it. Also, anybody remember Cappuccino Cafe?

FRIDAY VIDEO THREESOME: NOVEMBER 2014

It's time for another Friday Video Threesome post in which we highlight three videos that involve Denton in some way, shape, or form. Today, we have a great video on Denton Coffee Culture created by a 16 year old, a video of Nite's performance at last month's SoFar Sounds show, and a fun GoPro video from Little Guys Movers showcasing what it's like to race a coffin down Oak St. Now let's watch some videos!

Here's a video about the coffee scene in Denton county from 16 year old Austin Leih. While Bookish is featured heavily, this is a video that focuses more on Denton County than the City of Denton so the other coffee shops we see are Trio in Flower Mound (which has fun Belgian waffle thingies, y'all) and Roots in Highland Village.

Nite at last month's SoFar Sounds show. You can read more about that show from our post here

Here's a fun video with a first-hand account of what it is like to go down Oak St. in a coffin from Little Guys Movers. Now we kinda wanna build our own coffin next October.
