On Saturday, March 25th, local nonprofit, Keep Denton Beautiful, will hold the annual Great American Cleanup. The event is Denton’s biggest and longest-running litter-cleanup event. In its 29th year, the Great American Cleanup mobilizes more than 2,000 Denton citizens each year to improve the beauty and environmental health of the Denton community.
The 2017 Great American Cleanup begins at 9 am on March 25th and will see volunteers cleaning assigned locations citywide. The network of cleanups will be followed by a party for the cleanup crew from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with free lunch for volunteers, live music, kids’ bounce houses, and more. Denton City Council member Dalton Gregory will give a special “thank you” speech to volunteers during the Appreciation Party, and prizes will be awarded to top volunteers.
Free cleanup supplies – including trash bags, litter grabbers, and vinyl gloves – will be available for registered volunteers during scheduled Supply Pickup Days, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 and Wednesday, March 22 at the Keep Denton Beautiful Office. The first 800 volunteers to pick up supplies will receive a special edition 2017 t-shirt, printed by Pan Ector Industries, KDB’s exclusive printing partner for this year’s event.
Denton is one of more than 20,000 communities that participate in the Great American Cleanup each spring. At Denton’s cleanup last year, a total of 2,201 community volunteers cleaned nearly four tons of trash and recycling from the city’s streets, waterways, and public spaces. Litter cleanup events like GAC are important in helping to abate the effects of misplaced waste and litter in our community. Litter not only detracts from the aesthetics of a community but can also present health and environmental hazards.
