Skimmed is our monthly look at current cultural, business and political information in Denton that you probably want to know about. It is designed to be read in under five minutes and we even bolded the important stuff so you can skim it! This week, we have info on a Denton-based super group, a bubble tea switcheroo, local murals, and plenty more. Skim away!
Denton has been a two bubble tea joint town for several years now. We love our beverages to be cute, Asian-influenced, and filled with small balls of tapioca. Needless to say, we were bummed when Kaleo, the bubble tea shop on Loop 288, closed late last year. Rayzor Ranch Town Center came to the rescue in the form of Kung Fu Tea, a far-reaching franchise store that specializes in multiple forms of bubble tea. The store is next to Chipotle on the south side of University near 35W. They are currently running a grand opening "buy 1-get 1 free" special on select beverages. We recommend the Taro Milk Tea!
Work has started on Denton's Spiral Diner location. The local-area vegan food chain was met with much excitement when we learned that they would be headed to Denton last fall. We can't wait until they open later this year so we can eat their delicious vegan wares and think about trying to be vegetarian again and then accidentally getting Whataburger at 1am later on that very same day.
In the world of closings, Dorothy's Kitchen Table the pay-what-you-can, volunteer-run restaurant in South East Denton has closed. The consensus group behind the restaurant decided to close the space and look for new ways to "enjoy true food and share it forever." We are excited to see what they come up with. BNQT (AKA the Midlake "supergroup" featuring members of Grandaddy, Travis, Franz Ferdinand and Band of Horses) released their first single this week. And yeah, you aren't crazy. BNQT did used to be Banquet, but 2017 is a busy year and no one has time for vowels anymore. Check out their blend of fuzzed-out, head-nodding guitar rock in the single Restart below. The whole album, dubbed "Volume 1" will be released April 28th via Bella Union and Dualtone.
