SEEN & HEARD: AUGUST 17TH 2015

will milne August 17, 2015

It is officially the last week until school starts, so that means lots of pool time for many of y'all. That said, there are still plenty of other fun things going on the next couple of weeks. Take a gander at a few of 'em in this edition of Seen and Heard.

Monday, August 17th

Spanish Immersion Story Time | North Branch Library | Free | 11am
Join Ms. Myra for another round of Spanish Story Time! This program, which includes puppets and crafts, is designed to introduce budding readers to Spanish, and to supplement the Spanish-speaking child’s vocabulary and creativity. Great for ages 1-5.

Chess Night | North Branch Library | Free | 6pm
All ages and all levels are welcome to play. What a great way to spend an evening as a family!

Tuesday, August 18th

Denton County Farmer’s Market | Carroll and Mulberry | Free | 7am-noon
Peaches and melons and tomatoes oh my! These locally grown delights are in season and are perfectly delectable. Get there while it’s still cool outside, and support our local farmers.

Wednesday, August 12th

School’s Out Scrap’s In | SCRAP Denton | $20 | 1-4pm
Seriously this is probably the best deal in town. A hump-day treat to break up the monotonous week now that the kids are all at home for the summer. This is the LAST session for this great program.

Montessori Art | Emily Fowler Library | Free | 2pm

Thursday, August 20th

Youth Art Contest | Commercial Exhibit Building | Free | 4-6pm
TODAY is the day to submit your entries into the Youth Art Contest at the North Texas Fair and Rodeo! Judging will begin at 6:30 and your child’s art will be on display until August 30.

Unicorn Lake Concert Series | Shops at Unicorn Lake | Free | 7pm
Grab a camping chair and bring your family to the free concerts on the plaza behind Beth Marie’s on Wind River Blvd. It’s a fun night to be out, and the local shops appreciate your support.

Friday, August 21st

North Texas Fair and Rodeo | Fairgrounds | $5 and up | August 21-29
TODAY is opening day of 9 straight nights of fun and entertainment, celebrating our Texas heritage and all its history. From rodeo, to live music, to quilts, to carnival rides, there is something for everyone! Support local farmers, ranchers, and makers!

Saturday, August 22nd

Children’s Activities | Denton Community Market | Free | 9-1
This Saturday One World Day School AND Springbok Academy have activities to help keep your children cool and teach you a thing or two. For ages 10 and under.

Kids Fest | Brunswick Bowling | Free for kids | 10am-2pm
Free bowling? You read that right. And discounts for adults, too. Tack on $1 hotdogs and refreshments and you’ve got yourself an end-of-summer party to remember.

Sunday, August 23rd

Keep Denton Beautiful Cleanup | Oak Street Draft House | Free | 12-1pm
Stop by OSDH and join KDB and all your favorite downtowners for a cleanup to show off our beautiful downtown for those new college students and their families. Bring some cash for a beverage at East Side afterward, cuz you’re gonna need it! It’s HOT out there!

Anyah Martinez is the mother of three busy boys and the founder of Explorium Denton, an emerging children's museum taking shape in Denton.
