DOCTOR WHO RETURNS TO DENTON

Shaun Treat

Tim Stoltzfus, owner of More Fun Comics & Games on the downtown Denton Square, is celebrating 15 years in business with an amazing gift for their customers and fans! For Free Comic Book Day 2018, Doctor Who #0 from Titan Comics will feature an exclusive variant cover by local artist Jake Ekiss that co-stars our historic Denton Courthouse! The Fourth Doctor (played on the iconic BBC series by Tom Baker) is being stalked by one of the Mondasian Cybermen, but you can capture this comic for FREE if you time-travel to More Fun Comics on Saturday May 5th for Free Comic Book Day!

As you may remember, this isn’t the first time Doctor Who has appeared in Denton, and it all began with an inspired idea followed by a really big gamble. “I guess it’s a genius idea only if you succeed,” Tim Stoltzfus recalls, “but you’re very well aware that you could be thought a fool if it fails.”  It was early 2014 when Stoltzfus first began to explore the idea of featuring Denton on a special comic book cover with archetypal characters. After a year of negotiation and stubborn determination, the iconic Denton Courthouse served as the backdrop for an exclusive variant cover for Doctor Who drawn by North Texas artist Jake Ekiss. Tim’s gamble was a smashing success, with copies quickly sold out within the first week. “I expected to have copies around for a year at least,” Stoltzfus marvels, “The event grew into a monster of its own.” Indeed, the release of the comic led to Doctor Who Day On The Denton Square, with cosplay groups bringing a Tardis to the Courthouse lawn, Mayor Watts issuing an official proclamation that made April 4, 2015 “Doctor Who Day,” and Whovian fans of all ages traveling from as far as Oklahoma to celebrate dressed as their favorite characters. “Seeing the smiles and joy everywhere make all the work and cleanup worth it,” Tim enthused afterwards in the Facebook event page; “The day meant a lot to me personally, and I cannot begin to tell everyone how much I appreciate it. Thank you! Denton is amazing!”

Doctor Who was just the beginning for More Fun Comics. A variant Spider-Man cover soon followed, then in 2016 came a Denton Batman #1 variant cover along with a visit from the legendary artist who drew it, Scott Williams. This year More Fun Comics & Games celebrates their 15 years in Denton with not just one but two new locally-sourced comics covers!

Sonic The Hedgehog #1 from IDW Comics features a custom variant cover rendered by Denton artist Devin Kraft, available only at More Fun Comics & Games after April 4th when the new series debuts.

The annual Free Comic Book Day on Saturday May 5 is one of the biggest days of the year for comics fans, so More Fun Comics is again teaming-up with Oak Street Draft House to preview the goods with a Free Comic Book Night on Thursday May 3, bringing free comics, a special pint glass, and a few other surprises.

Happy Anniversary to Tim and More Fun, we appreciate all you do to bring excitement and enthusiasm to Denton!
