NEW FOOD AT WEST OAK

West Oak Coffee Bar invited us to try out some of their new menu. Being the gluttonous, hungry folk we are, we could never turn down such an offer. They said a bunch of stuff to us while we were there, but we mostly just heard "pie" a couple of times and nodded our heads a lot. We went back a few days later to talk to new kitchen co-manager, Benjamin Davidson, about the menu and what's coming up for West Oak Coffee Bar.

RIFF RAFF IN DENTON

Houston native, RiFF RAFF played at Denton's very own Rockin' Rodeo last Thursday, and it was a real treat, y'all. We had no idea what to expect when first walking into the club on a Thursday. Who the hell goes to see RiFF RAFF during finals week in Denton, we asked? Turns out, its a lot of college-aged, hazy-eyed teens and young twenty somethings. No judgement, guys. We were there, too. WHAT WE DID: MAY 18TH 2015

Here's this week's edition of What We Did, our weekly photo recap of the past seven days. It looks as if it has been a pretty danged good week, too. We had a few thunderstorms, had a bunch of students graduate from college, and took in plenty of live music. All of which is evident in the eighteen photos below.

Click on the images below to get linked to the appropriate photographer's Instagram account where you can then follow them and get a new Instagram buddy! To be included in next week's What We Did, make sure to tag your Instagram photos with #WDDI and we will put our favorites in next week's post.

PEOPLE OF DENTON: CLINT WILSON

It’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture in an increasingly polarized world. Yet, when you meet a man like Clint Wilson (a priest by trade and an optimist by choice) - refreshing doesn’t even begin to cut it. Religious or not, cynicism is a pervasive american pastime, so when we sat down in the Lord’s house with Father Clint, we were enlightened to say the least. We won’t hold it as sin against him for gracing our lone star state only two years ago, because he got here as fast as he could. We philosophize and sort through his thoughts on what makes a community work in the interview below. Wilson clears up some common misconceptions that folks might have about priestly duties, and fills us in on his thoughts about alcohol, community organizations, and hypothetical biblical boxing champs.

CONCERNS ABOUT "SQUARE CONCERN"

Last week, the Denton Record Chronicle published an editorial that enumerated on a few issues some claim are plaguing the Denton downtown square. Among the issues are parking, noise, the types of businesses that are attracted to the square and an overall lack of family-friendly atmosphere. You can read the whole thing here. Dentonite Dave Sims (and many others) took umbrage to the piece. This mindset hasn't just been seen in that one location, however. A few City Council candidates in the election that ended on this past Saturday ran on issues related to downtown Denton being a dangerous place in need of more police presneece. Below, you can find Sims thoughts on why the DRC article is out of touch with the current state and direction of downtown Denton. Read through it and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

WHAT WE DID: MAY 11TH 2015

What We Did is our weekly roundup of photos that WDDI staff and readers have taken over the past seven days. It's our excuse to talk about the weather, local sports teams, and the like. you can bet your ass that we're going to talk about the weather this week. We did have a flipping tornado, after all. And we aren't the only ones talking about the weather this (strangely) sunny morning. In fact, a good percentage of your tagged photos were weather-related because Denton is full of amateur storm chasers. So we hope you like dramatic skies and whatnot.

If you'd like to be included in What We Did, tag your images with #WDDI on Instagram, and check back here next Monday. As always, we're limited in the photos we can post, but we encourage you to search the hashtag #WDDI and check out all of the other awesome photos that were posted that we were unable to post on the blog. Click the images below to be led back to the photographer's Instagram page. Have a great week!
