Denton's co-working space and entrepreneurial center, Stoke, held a celebration in honor of their first birthday earlier this week. We were there of course (who can resist free cupcakes?) and took a few photos. Check out a few photos of the event by WDDI-er, Danielle Marie Longueville, below. You

Let’s be clear about one thing: Denton is nowhere near Silicon Valley.
Obviously this is true geographically, but it’s also true in the sense that people’s experiences in the tech industry in Denton are nothing like what you’ll find in the news or in TV shows like Silicon Valley.
The tech industry in Denton actually provides a refreshing counterpoint to some of the problems that plague Silicon Valley (i.e. lack of diversity, allegations of sexual harassment, etc..). This is reflected in the existence of places like Stoke, a co-working space and entrepreneurial center that opened in 2016. The people who choose to work at Stoke also reflect an ethos of consideration for the larger community. Read on to find out how you can help Stoke celebrate their one year anniversary later this week!

What would a smarter Denton look like?
UNT College of Information doctoral student Abdulrahman Habib thinks about this question a lot. Imagine being able to monitor your electricity usage in real time, he suggests. What about passing by a construction site and getting a notification on your phone telling you what the construction is for? These are just a couple of the ways that Habib envisions that open data could be used to make Denton a smart city. Open data can “help us learn from real data, not anecdotal evidence” and is “a very good way to engage with the city by not shouting and criticizing,” Habib says.

Stoke is a co-working and entrepreneurial center in Denton, TX that plays host to a hotbed of some of Denton's most creative folks working in the tech scene. In this new series, we will talk with some of they key people that put in work at Stoke. For the first in our collaboration with Stoke, we spoke with Kyle Taylor. Taylor is Senior Drupal Developer at LevelTen and President of TechMill, a non-profit organization led by a group of entrepreneurs, techies and software developers in Denton with a mission to develop and promote the city as a startup hub in North Texas. We wanted to pick his brain to learn a bit more about TechMill, the startup scene in Denton, and - of course - his favorite lunch spot. Read on for more!

Today, marks the third Bootstrap Denton. The networking event is put on every year by Denton non-profit group, TechMill. Maybe you’ve overheard some very tech-y terms floating around in conversations while grabbing your morning coffee at West Oak, or your happy hour beverage at Harvest House. Not surprising, as TechMill, a Denton-based non-profit, holds their weekly meetings at both of these popular watering holes. Additionally, they encourage all whom are present to join in on the conversation. One of the most popular topics in our tech community pertains to "open source data," or information that is freely accessible. Denton just so happens to already be an open source city, meaning that all of the data collected by the city is available to anyone, but you need to be willing to dig deep enough to find it, which is often an unintended barrier for citizens who don’t have a tech-savvy background. Read on to see what kind of data we're digging into as we near Open Data Day.

As you find your self staring down the barrel of another Valentines Day, consider these events for your weekend plans. All of them have been painstakingly hand-picked for quality and diversity. The most important event this coming week is the 64th House District Republican Primary Debate we’re hosting at Dan’s Silverleaf on Monday at 7PM. City councilman Kevin Roden will moderate and Glen Farris will keep time. This is a pretty unique event as it is possibly the only debate for the state level position that is open to the public (with access to beer, no less). The event will be live-streamed and we encourage you to come out and check out the candidates, one of which will most likely take the HD64 seat. Take your photos and get in the know, y'all.
