SHAUN TREAT
Welcome to 2018, after driving a stake into the heart of 2017 and contemplating what New Years Resolutions you’ve settled on. We’re thinking maybe more tacos and exploring DIY music venues, maybe some yoga and bicycling so long as there is beer. At least we can be thankful that J&J’s Old Dirty Basement is back! Here’s our top WDDI #DEN10 events you can’t miss as we welcome 2018 with love & hope & #Dentoning a’plenty.
THURSDAY, January 4th
First Thursday Gypsy Jazz | Barley & Board | 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM
We all adore Le Not So Hot Klub du Denton playing the hits of Django Reinhardt, so gnoshing while toe-tapping seems a perfect way to ease into the weekend! Thursdays are always poppin’ with Glitterbomb at Andy’s, a bicycle ride at Eastside, or jazz at Steve’s Wine Bar, so keep moving to stay warm.
Lonestar Texas Thursdays | Backyard On Bell | 9:00 PM - 11:59 PM
A favorite outdoor music venue battles the winter cold with hot tunes, this week featuring local skunkgrass troubadours Boxcar Bandits as well as aspiring Americana auteur Matt Grigsby.
FRIDAY, January 5th
Inaugural Artist In Residence Show | SCRAP | 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
It’s First Friday, which means arts-&-craftiness galore! Artists Jess Tarr, Brittany Shaban, and Cynthia Giron created pieces from SCRAP's varied inventory, and were challenged to use specific unconventional materials in their works. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided, along with a make-and-take craft. All pieces will be for sale, benefiting future Re:Vision Gallery shows at SCRAP as well as the artists.
Happy Birthday Joe | Dan’s Silver Leaf | 10:00 PM - 1:00 AM
It’s been well over a year since beloved Brave Combo percussionist Joe Cripps went missing, but a slew of his forlorn friends & admirers are celebrating his birthday in absentia with this all-star music line-up to benefit DMAC. There will be t-shirts and shared memories available. We miss you, Joe.
SATURDAY, January 6th
NTX Roller Derby Open House | Lone Star Indoor Sports &Events Center | 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
We love us some Saturday Jazz Brunch at The Chestnut Tree after some Yoga On The Square, but if your New Years resolution is looking to make some fierce female friends then check out roller derby try-outs for North Texas Roller Derby and meet some Fighting Unicorns!
Ol’ Dirty Basement Resurrection Show | J&J’s Pizza | 5:00 PM - 12:00 AM
A collective cheer arose with news that J&J’s ODB is back, and this is the official celebration with an old fashioned variety show! Comedy, live music, and Schlitz will fill this evening sure to be loaded with smiles for miles.
Party On with Spiderweb Salon | Wine2 | 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Settle in with a glass of wine to meet the brand new editorial team of this creative collective, hear a little about Spiderweb Salon’s big plans for 2018 and enjoy featured performances from talented friends, PLUS for the first time in years they're opening up the mic for on-the-spot signups!
Sarah Jaffe | Dan’s SilverLeaf | 9:00 PM - 11:59 PM
This Denton legend has been touring BAD BABY to accolades, but comes home to the SilverLeaf to wow us with her mesmerizing sound for this rare night of magical music. If you can find or sweet-talk a ticket, you can maybe see her Sunday encore.
SUNDAY, January 7th
Denton Bikes and Coffee | West Oak Coffee | 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Every Sunday, the Denton Independent Motorcycle Show meets up to sip coffee and plan rides. Best part is you can stop in to eyeball their sweet rides or maybe talk shop over a cup of joe… and maybe slice of pie.
Smash Brothers Tournament & Net Neutrality Rally | Source Gaming Lounge | 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Join the Source Gamer Gurus for a Net Neutrality Rally and Smash Brothers tournament to raise funds for the non-profit organization Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
