A group which calls itself A United Denton will host a rally at the Historic Denton Courthouse 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. January 21, 2017. The event is free, inclusive, and open to everyone. The group considers the rally to be in solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington, scheduled on the same day.
The Women's March on Washington was organized for the purpose of joining people together, to both celebrate and defend the unique differences found among the American population. Their mission states, “We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families— recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.”
While not everyone can get away and fly to Washington to join, there are groups rallying across the country that are working in congruence to stand up for the same things in their specific areas. Denton is made up of a diverse population - with people from all races, religions, affiliations and creeds living in a small corner north of a giant metroplex. We work hard to celebrate our differences, and to recognize the good in one another and our community.
Here in Denton, to show their support of one another, A United Denton has organized the local rally. At noon people will convene and from 12:30 to 1 p.m. they will circle the courthouse, standing shoulder to shoulder. Women, men, and children of every color, creed, and identification are welcome to join. Together, they will affirm a collective commitment to promote hope, love, peace, human rights, and justice.
To quote from the Official Statement of the organizers of the Women's March on Washington, the rally will affirm the worth and human rights of all, especially those who have faced the greatest obstacles to full citizenship and recognition: "of women, immigrants of all statuses, those with diverse religious faiths particularly Muslim, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native and Indigenous people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, the economically impoverished and survivors of sexual assault."
You can get involved by joining in at the rally, or lending a hand in the organizing of the rally. Check out their Facebook page here and get involved.
