On Saturday, Aug 27th, Denton's cheekiest charity is hosting a movie night on the courthouse lawn. This season's selection is Pokemon: The First Movie because Glen thinks he'll get a high CP Snorlax out of it somehow. That, and we see it as a great way to utilize all of the Pokemon Go players who are already hanging at the 'gym' on the corner of Hickory and Locust for a great cause.
The event is put on by Friends with Benefits: Denton, an organization that raises funds and awareness for some of Denton's most necessary non-profits.
During this event Friends with Benefits will be hosting not only a movie, but also a "Keep Denton Warm Campaign" for Our Daily Bread. They'll be filling up a Little Guys Moving truck with coats, gloves, socks, shoes, hats and scarves to help keep some of our most vulnerable populations warm. Make sure you clean out your closets, rummage through those 'winter tubs,' and pick up a few things from Target to help out the homeless men, women, and families that frequent Our Daily Bread through the winter months.
So make your plans, mark your calendars and pack your cooler full of craft beer. We recommend biking or walking since (fingers crossed) the weather will hopefully be perfect. Make sure you bring a blanket or a lawn chair, the movie will start around 8:30, after the sun has set.
This event is generously sponsored by Paschal Bar, East Side, Barley & Board, LSA Burger Co., (which all happen to be great Pokemon-Go stops) Denton County Animal ER and Vintage Variety Market and We Denton Do It. Can't make it out for the movie? Drop box locations for winter wear are Paschal, Oak Street Drafthouse, The Chestnut Tree, Harvest House, Mulberry Street Cantina, Sweetwater, GDAC, and The Bearded Monk before August the 27th.
Dancing is more your speed than movie watching? That's cool too - Sunday, August 28th, they will be hosting a Sock Hop at Harvest House. Cost of entry will be a donation of winter wear for the homeless. At 5pm Nice Up Crew will be serving up some 50's jams, at 6 The Garage Underground will cover the 60's, at 7 Kim Nall & The Fringe will bring back those 70's vibes, at 8 The Carz will take you back to the 80's, at 9 a Nirvana set performed by Swandiver will make us wish we were back in the 90's and at 10 Different Strokes will carry us back into the new millennium. The first people to show up will get a free set of 50's style glasses and scarfs, donated by the Hip Hop 50's Shop.
All of this is brought to you by Friends with Benefits in the name of helping Our Daily Bread this winter. So get out of the house, grab a coat to help someone out, and join in the fun!
