The fact that Oaktopia autocorrects to "octopi" is no longer our favorite thing about the local music festival. A few weeks ago, they gave us our first preview of what this year's festival would look like. They dropped names like Dr. Dog, Wavves, Nikki Lane, White Denim, Best Coast, Andrew WK, Mates of State, and Grandpa vs Prowler (Danny Masterson and Michael Pena) and promised the second announcement would up the ante. Today, they proved that they weren't bluffing. Read on to find out the list of additional bands playing Oaktopia 2016.
Oaktopia announced today that singer-song writer Cat Power; baroque pop weirdos Beirut; hip-hop artist O.T. Genasis; Americana artist Pete Yorn; DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown (Erykah Badu), and a few others would be rounding out this year's festival. To see the full lineup, check out OaktopiaFest.com or go ahead and buy tickets here (if you haven't already).
2016 marks year four for the no-longer-fledgling festival and this year we would say they have officially graduated. Last year's festival featured headliners such as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and The Polyphonic Spree. This year is looking to be even more fun. “The 2016 Oaktopia Festival is going to be our biggest year yet,” said Matt Battaglia Oaktopia founder. “With a great variety of music and arts as well as an enhanced effort to improving the overall guest experience, this year’s festival is going to be an awesome 3-day event!” The festival returns to downtown Denton, TX this fall on September 22nd and runs through the 24th.
Aside from what we've already listed above, this year will reportedly also feature plenty of local musicians and the eerie sounding "Oaktopia Super Blood Moon Parties." Apparently only half of what is expected has been announced so far so this is bound to be interesting. The call for local artist submissions to play this year closes today at midnight so submit while you can!
