SEEN AND HEARD: APRIL 17TH 2015

will milne April 17, 2015

There have to be terms other than "family-friendly" that describe things in which both parents and children, alike, are not bored out of their skull at, right? It seems the term is most often used to describe movies that a parent can sit through and maybe chuckle twice. We've done our best below to collect a few "family-friendly" events that go beyond two chuckles in this week's Seen and Heard. Check 'em out below and have a great weekend!

April 8-May 3

Annual High School Art Show | Center for Visual Arts | Free | noon-5, Tues-Sun

Bring your aspiring artists to experience what their peers are capable of. Let their imaginations run wild with the dreams of becoming a professional painter or sculptor.  This exhibit features work by students from the high schools in the Denton Independent School District.

Friday, April 17th

Book Extravaganza | Emily Fowler Library | Free | 4:30pm

It’s the Lollapalooza of books, parents, and your children ages 3 - 10 have front row tickets! Join students from UNT as they share their favorite children’s books and lead book-related activities.

Brick Connection | Golden Triangle Mall | $6/adult $4/child | 12 - 8pm on Fri. 9am - 9pm
Everything is awesome! Go get your Lego on and build a sweet spaceship or something at this brick-a-riffic event filled with plenty of prizes and awesome Lego creations from some master builders.

Saturday, April 18th

Explorium Denton | Mulberry and Carroll Blvd. | Free | 9am-1pm

Did you miss out on making paper at the Great American Cleanup? Re-live this simple activity at the Denton Community Market this Saturday from 9-1. Bring the whole family for shopping, music, and food.

Redbud Festival | Denton Civic Center | Free | 10am-4pm
Duh. We've already talked your ear off about this one, but rightfully so. Denton’s Redbud Festival dates back to the 1930’s and serves as more than just an Arbor Day celebration. Live music, activities, teaching, the Trashion Fashion show, and of course food, is all part of this celebration of the community beautification.

Drag Racing | North Star Dragway | Kids Free | 3pm
Spring Nostalgia Nationals bring drag racing back from the 50’s and 60’s. Remember when Danny and Kenickie raced for pinks? Grab a pit pass with your adult ticket ($20) for a real thrill. Raining? Be sure to call ahead for weather-related track info: 940-482-9998

Monday, April 20th

Family Literacy Day/Night | Denton Public Library South Branch | Free | 10-11:30am; 6:30-8pm
Children ages 3-5 and their families are invited for a morning literacy program, and children in grades K-3 are invited in the evening. Learn how to prepare your child to be an excellent reader, how to monitor their progress, and how to encourage reading at home. Enjoy activities, games and story time as well. For the early program, children will get to take home a free book, and speech/hearing screening will be available for a limited number of participants. The evening crowd will round out the night with a game of bingo. RSVP to stacy.nunnelee@unt.edu. The DPL has partnered with the UNT Speech and Hearing Center for to make this program possible.
