HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

Words by Alyssa Stevenson

The weather is finally cooling down, so it's finally feeling like we start thinking about the holidays. Major big box stores have had their holiday merchandise out for about a month - but we're just warming up to the idea of holiday shopping ourselves. Luckily, the shops downtown will be open for extra hours this weekend for the Holiday Open House so we can start checking gifts off of our lists. Read on to make sure you know where you should definitely stop to shop.

Vintage Bleu is ready to style your mantle.

While the downtown area has been packed with some of our favorite local retailers for years, it feels like there has been an influx of retail lately. We're into it - as we can't spend our whole day eating ice cream and weighing out gummy bears. (Or can we?)

If you're scouting out furniture, vintage finds, and unique home decor, make sure to stop by Vintage Bleu, on Oak next to 940's and Shop the Barn - which just reopened next door to La Di Da on Locust. Serendipity has you covered for the best candles and funky finds for your home. Whimsy Finds, which mixes home goods and fun stuff for your closet will be serving wine-a-ritas so you can sip while you shop! We always have to stop by Garden Gate for the best ornaments to add to the tree or exchange at the office party.

If you're looking for holiday dresses for parties or accessories to stuff into stockings, stop by the newly opened Zig Zag Stripe (two stories of clothes y'all), the always reliable La Di Da (with their cheeky holiday tees), Palm Tree Boutique (who has an embroidery deal happening) or JT Clothier's. (Eileen Fisher and Free People for the win!) JT Clothier's also has you covered if you need a super spiffy shirt, tie or cuff links for the dudes in your life. Norman Roscoe and Discover Denton have you covered for Denton centric screened tee's.

Garden Gate keeps it cozy.

As always, the DIME Store has the most incredible selection of locally crafted handmade goods to wrap up and put under the tree. We hear they'll also be giving away totes with purchases of $100. Y'all, they have the cutest pickle ornaments of all time!

Grab a few new board games for all of those days you're about to spend with extended family from More Fun Comics and Games, and stop by Recycled for a couple of coffee table books for people to peruse while they're waiting hanging around the house.

Need a break from the holiday shopping? Stop by Wine Squared for 1/2 priced wine by the glass. Don't forget - you can get that to-go! Yes, you can walk around the square while sipping on wine and shopping. It's basically the best way you could shop ever. Go ahead and pick up a few bottles for all of those holiday parties while you're at it.

Norman Roscoe rocks the holiday sweatshirt like no other.

SURPIES!

A little over a year ago Mariah Laughlin started baking up pies to pair with craft brews at Bearded Monk. Not too long after that she picked up steam on her pie-filled instagram account and her pie landed a magazine cover. While her crust skills are crazy good - she is really into connecting with people over pie. Read on to find out why you should head out to Nerd Nite next week to hear all about her life of pie.

VIDEO: DRONE VS DENTON (COFFIN RACES)

As a reward for your voting today, we are sharing an awesome drone video from last month's Coffin Races created by Nick Wood. Wood is a local videographer (and sometimes photographer) that creates short videos for companies for promotional use. With this video, Wood hoped to, "give a visual representation of the type of community our city has and how so many of our local business help support one another. " To create the video, Wood first got permission from the city to use his registered DJI Phantom 3 drone and then flew it all over the place during the coffin races. If you saw a white shape floating in the sky that day, it was probably him. Click through to watch his video!

WHAT WE DID: HALLOWEEN WEEKEND 2016 EDITION

We had so many photos and tagged photos from the spooky festivities this weekend that we decided they deserved their own What We Did post.

Saturday's coffin races are always our favorite aspect of Halloween in Denton and this year was no slouch. The designs this year were once again amazing and there were over 70 entries. On a sidenote, we love how Pan Ector have basically become the villains of the annual race with their ability to think outside of the box (literally in this case).

The coffin races weren't the only Halloween activity going on this weekend, though. Below, you'll also find photos from costume parties, live music, twilight parade, and a whole bunch of awesome stuff that happened.
