Summertime 2018 days are numbered, so get out there to explore our WDDI Guide to Summer Fun in Denton and the CVB’s Denton On A Dollar as the countdown for back-to-school marches on. This week of #DENTONING adventures has surprising variety, so here is our top #DEN10 events to check out around town but post your favorites we missed in the comments.


THURSDAY, August 9th

Southpaw Preachers | Harvest House| 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM  
Enjoy an evening on the outside patio with soul, funk, R&B, Motown and more as the Southpaw Preachers serenade summertime with their sure-fire bootyshakin’ sounds.

FRIDAY, August 10th

The Mads from MST3K Live Movie Riffing | Alamo Drafthouse | 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM  
We are excited about Denton’s new Alamo Drafthouse and the fun it brings to town, so imagine our surprise when we heard Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu from Mystery Science Theater 3000 are coming to Denton for this one-night snarkfest! Grab tix now!

Daniel Markham does Neil Young| Andy’s Bar | 10:00 PM - 1:00 AM  
Daniel has rounded up an all-star cast of friends to perform in this hits-filled tribute to the music of Neil Young, and after the show there’s a special screening of Rust Never Sleeps. $5 for advance tickets, $10 at the door.

The Wizard of OZ | Campus Theater | 7:30 PM showtimes & weekend matinee 2 PM  
Denton Community Theatre proudly presents The Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, with Music and Lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, Background Music by Herbert Stothart, Dance and Vocal Arrangements by Peter Howard, Orchestration by Larry Wilcox, Adapted by John Kane for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Based upon the Classic Motion Picture owned by Turner Entertainment Co. and distributed in all media by Warner Bros. This production is directed by Mildred A. Peveto with music direction by Jett Cheek. 

Tickets available online at dentoncommunitytheatre.com or through the Campus Box Office at 940-382-7014 ext. 1 - Monday through Friday from 1pm to 5pm. Ticket prices are: Adult - $22, Senior (62+) - $18, Student - $15, Child (12 & under) - $10. Group rates are available at the Campus Box Office for groups of 10 or more.

Stray Fest Benefit Bash| The Bean Cave | 8:00 PM - 1:00 AM  
I thought this was the collective that hosts shows in the old “The Bear Cave” spot off the Square, but maybe the Bean Cave is some other hip DIY venue? Whatever, you can ask about the addy for this benefit show for a new film festival concept on their event page… if you know the secret password. Observe and report!

SATURDAY, August 11th

Denton Community Market | Denton County Historic Park | 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM  
The beloved Denton Community Market is the best way to ring in Saturdays, with all kinds of nifty crafty swag, produce, veggies, food, tours of the Bayless-Selby House, and live music! Browsing always pairs nicely with Saturday Jazz Brunch at The Chestnut Tree after some Yoga On The Square.

Gibson-Grant Cabin Open House | Flower Mound | 8:00 AM - 12:01 PM
Okay, it’s a bit of a drive, but totally worth it to get your first glimpse of the oldest log cabin in Denton County hidden in plain sight and now undergoing restoration! Learn about its history, accidental discovery, and how you can get involved in its ongoing preservation.  

Perseid Meteor Shower Star Party| UNT Rafes Urban Astronomy Center | 9:00 PM - 2:00 PM  
The year’s biggest meteor shower is also a big party at the UNT observatory, with telescopes set up to stargaze or planetwatch, and a presentation on the Perseid Meteor Shower! Only $5!

SUNDAY, August 12th

Pink Tsunami Drag Competition| Q’s Cafe| 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM  
This FUNdraiser offers a downtown drag showdown in Denton’s new GLBTQ+ café that promises an evening full of entertainment and performances.

Monk Open Mic| Bearded Monk | 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM  
Hosted by comedian Joey Johnson, this FREE event is open to performers and spectators 21+ (minors are allowed with parent/guardian). Instrumentalists, singers, dancers, storytellers, comedians, poets, jugglers, magicians and others are all welcome. So grab your harp, guitar, juggling pins, magic wand, whatever you need, and get up there to wow the crowd!
