Once a month, the good people at Shift Coffee get together for a meeting to pitch their ideas for new coffee brews, tasty seasonal drinks, and other assortments. Their aim is to use local ingredients when possible, to stay inventive and fresh in their approach, and to keep their patrons begging for more.

We discovered their latest concoction, Golden Times, last week during a meeting. Golden Times is a foamy alternative to a latte for those suffering from over-caffeination, wintery colds, or just a taste for warm spices and deliciousness.

Thoughtful Shift barista, Sadie Ryckoff, pitched the beverage last month during Shift's regular brainstorm session, and the cafe rolled it out to the public soon after. She was kind enough to spill the proverbial beans regarding her private obsession with adding healthy alternatives to a menu, along with using her favorite anti-inflammatory ingredients: ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper.

The perfect mixture of what tasted like a wise grandmother’s mysterious concoction.

Golden times delighted us with its milky and mild flavors, creating the perfect mixture of what tasted like a wise grandmother’s mysterious concoction. In fact, Sadie felt like that wise, old grandmother - keeping her patrons well during our cold winter months. We’d like to say we were surprised by the interesting alternative drinks at Shift Coffee, but they have undoubtedly established themselves in Denton as a coffeehouse favorite.

From mixing their homemade syrups with herbs like lavender and sage, making their own chai tea-flavored marshmallows, to brewing some of the best coffee and espresso we’ve ever had the pleasure of sipping, we will continue to visit Shift because they offer up something unexpected each time we do.

You can try Golden Times yourself at Shift Coffee at 519 S. Locust St. in Denton, TX. Shift is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on the weekends from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
