Free Comic Book Day is one of the most anticipated events of the nerd year, always the first Saturday in May, when fans get a preview of upcoming projects involving their favorite icons or discover new characters. More Fun Comics and Games is celebrating its 15th year in Denton with a very special #FCBD guest, comics legend Scott Williams, who illustrated the Denton Batman #1 exclusive variant cover. After a day of in-store signings on the downtown Denton Square, the award-winning illustrator will be revealing his artistic beginnings, his storied career, and behind-the-panels tales of infamous projects in a very special Nerd Nite Denton event at the Bearded Monk on Saturday May 6 at 8pm.

Keep Denton Beautiful's annual Redbud Festival is one of our favorite festivals in Denton. The Arbor Day celebration takes place every year at the Denton Civic Center and features music, classes, environmental information, food, a fashion show and plenty more (did we mention free baby trees?). The award-winning festival is now in its 24th year and keeps getting better and better. One of our favorite aspects of the festival is the TRASHion Fashion program which promotes creative reuse by creating "wearable art" out of materials that would otherwise have been discarded. UNT's Fine Art Series has brought Luminarium: Architects of Air to Denton for this week. The world-renowned, traveling art exhibit features groups of inflatable structures open for exploration and viewing. Even better, the event is free for the general public. From the outside, the exhibit looks like a group of gigantic, real-life Mario Kart weapons, but once you enter the sculpture, you are greeted with a maze of cave-like colorful rooms to walk through and explore. Today’s featured artist is lifelong Dentonite, Eric Mancini. You may recognize his trademark XO’s and urban graffiti-tag like style from your walks about town. Read MoreART SHOW: MARIA RAZO AT BRICK HAUS COLLECTIVE
Local artist organization, Brick Haus Collective, recently featured a solo show by artist Maria Razo. The show, entitled "Mi Tierra," contained 16 pieces inspired by the natural world, Razo's personal experiences, memories, and cultural background. Many of Razo's compositions include animals and plants that invite the viewer to connect with nature in a somewhat spiritual way. Most of the work in the show is lithography, but there were also monotypes, paintings, and some mixed media. The latter even incorporated found patterns, digital imagery, and textiles. Her reception on Saturday evening included local vendors, Sarah Westrup with Tierra Firme and Mayra Martinez of Everything Living, whose goods paired nicely with Razo's artistic sensibility.
